THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER A A A A A A AN AN AN AN PUBLISHED NVERY AFTNRNOON, A A A A A A A A AN NN BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. By CLYDE J. PRYOR. AN AN Wntered in the postofice at Bemidjl. Minr., second class matter. AR ArARASANN SUBSCRIPTION---85.00 PER ANNUM We cannot but comment on the improved appearance of the Interna- tional Falls Press, since the present manager took hold of the helm of that publication. The Press now contains more local news, general comment and signs of “real life” than at any time for several months. Somebody is evidently ‘“getting a move on,” up there in the “big dam town,” on behalf of the Press. We wipe a wet eyelash and drop a tear of regret at the untimely tak- ing off of Henry Young, brother of Joseph Young of this city, an account of whose death and burial is con- tained in the last 1ssue of the Todd County News. The writer had the pleasure of a long-standing acquaint- ance with Henry Young, and we always knew him as an honest, up- right young man who was an honor to the newspaper profession. His was a heart of gold. He was one of nature’s noblemen in its truest sense—brave, generous, manly. His was the soul of honor, and his friends and friendships were sacred to him. The world can ill afford to lose such as he. In the last issue of the Cass Lake Times, the editor thereof takes unto himself some credit for what he is pleased to term the improved appearance of the matter contained in the Pioneer relative to the reservation town and its claims for the sixth state normal school. Whatever the FPioneer may have printed concerning Cass Lake we meant, and we have no apologies to offer to anyone. The fact remains that if it were not that a Duluth man owned the townsite of Cass Lake, that place would stand about as much show of getting that state nor- mal as our suburb of Nymore. There are several “interests” which are alive to Cass Lake’s demands; and they are a difficult “bunch” to deal with. They have a large fund for entertainments and “perquisites.” The Pioneer has no “regrets.” NAMED BY PRESIDENT TAFT Number of Nominations 8ent to ths Senate. ‘Washington, March 2J),—The presi- dent has made the following nomina- tions; Ambassador extraordinary and plen- ipotentiary to Italy, John G. RENOUNGES RIGHT TO THRONE OF SERVIA Crown Prince’s Actien Result of Bitter Press Campaign, Belgrade, Servia, March 25— George, crown prince of Servia, has renounced his right of succession to the Servian throne. This actlon Is the result of a bitter press campaign in which the crown prince was ac- cused of being the cause of the recent death of one of his servants, a man named Kolakovitz. In a letter to Premier Novakovitch the crown prince announces that he has taken this step rather than rest under the suspicion of having mur- dered his servant and that by the re- nunciation he foregoes all special privileges and immuaities that attach to the person of the heir to the throne, Continuing, he cxpresses his willing- ness to go abroad for a lengthy so- Journ, KIDNAPPERS ARE INDICTED Abductors of Whitla Boy Accused of Blackmail. MAN'S IDENTITY CERTAIN Thomas F. Boyle of Sharon, Pa,, Says the Prisoner Is His Brother James and That the Woman s the Latter’s Supposed Wife—Reports Say She Was a Burlesque Actress Before Meeting Boyle. Cleveland, March 2. —The county grand jury has reported an indictment against James H. Boyle and Helen Boyle, alias Faulkner, charging them with blackmail. The charge is based on the payvment of §10,000 ransom by J. P. Whitla for the recovery of his son Willie here last Monday. The finding of an indictment against Boyle and his wife is only a formal precaution. They will not be placed on trial here, but will be taken to Pennsylvania as originally planned. Extreme punishment for kidnapping in Pennsylvania is life imprisonment. In Ohio the extreme penalty for black- mail is five years In the penitentiary and a fine of §1,000. The last doubt in the minds of the local police officers as to the exact identity of the man held for the kid- napping of Willie Whitla was removed when Thomas F. Boyle of Sharon, Pa., visited the prisoner. He said the pris- oner is his brother James. It was ex- pected by the police that the brother would complete the identification, as they were practically certaln of the information received concerning the alleged kidnapper. After his arrival here Thomas Boyle had a long conversation with his brother in the presence of Chief of Police Kohler. Arrangements were made between the brothers to obtain an attorney for the prisoner and pre- pare his defense. Up to then Boyle, the suspect, had not consulted with a lawyer or taken any steps towards looking after his own interests. The prisoner’s brother also saw Mrs. Boyle, but could say nothing regarding her other than that she is the wife of James Boyle. He sald he knew nothing of her and that she is unknown in Sharon. The local police are making no effort to learn of the woman'’s past history or identity. Mr. Whitla called on Chief of Police Kohler, identified the money found on Mr. Boyle and offered his services for the prosecution of the suspects. BELIEVE WOMAN TO BLAME Sharon (Pa.) People Say Boyle Did Not Plan Kidnapping. Sharon, Pa., March 23—There is a strong feeling here against the kid- nappers of Willie Whitla, but Sharon people do not believe that Boyle is the brains of the scheme which was executed in carrying away the boy. Residents who have known Boyle since he was a little boy Insist that either his wife or a third party planned the kidnapping. Boyle is re- garded as a shiftless sort of fellow, who might have been influenced by the' cunning of his wife, or carried out the kidnapping for a third party, but it would be difficult to convince many people here that he originally planned the crime. Interest centers in Boyle’s wife, The slender, blonde woman, whom as Helen Faulkner or Helen McDonough Boyle married in Denver a year ago, is an unsolvable problem to Sharon residents. ‘When she visited here at the time of the death of Boyle’s uncle she was known to many people in Sharon and was well liked. Relatives of Boyle say that they have little hope of him escaping the charge of kidnapping. He has admit- ted to several relatives that the police have positive evidence against him in the case. He is “leaving it all to the woman,” he has told his friends, be- cause “whatever she says goes.” MET HER AT EAST ST. LOUIS Boyle Woman Formerly With a Bur- lesque Show. Followers of pugilism are anxious to see Ketchel perform to decide for themselves what chance he has against Jack Johnson, the colored champion, with whom he is matched. Ketchel’s opponent tonight will be “Philadelphia Jack” O'Brien, who was defeated by Tommy Burns, the latter going down in turn before John- son in Australia. TUnless Ketchel dis- poses of O’Brien in quick time tonight the experts figure that he will have little chance against Johnson. Ketchel is still middléwelght cham- plon, having regained the title by de- feating Billy Papke on the coast some time ago. He is out of the middle- welght class, however, as far as weight 1s concerned, tipping the | scales now at about 180 pounds. He has not fought since defeating Papke, but says he has little doubt that he will put O’'Brien away with ease: There will be a-big attendance at the fight, which will take place before one of the best sporting clubs of this clty.
