Close. cngs, Germany Particularly Hard Pressed—Great Britain Also Needs Ore for Armament. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 14.—A scram- bie for iron ore supplies is one of the most influential factors in present- day European politics, according to the weekly bulletin of the Berens Financial News Bureau. Germany in particular is hard pressed to secure enough iron ore for its steel industry, the analysis points out “How great is this difficulty is shown by the fact that Germany has started exploitation of mines with such low- grades ores that ordinarily never would permit development. Such ore mines exist In Badenia, Franconia (the northern part of Bavaria) and at Salz- gitter in Thurgina. “Great Britain is not much better off than Germany with respect to iron ore supplies. She needs an enormous sup- ply to maintain her armament and in- dustrial boom. England was able to contract for large quantities of highest grade ore from Swedish mines. This hit German steel manufacturers and also Czechbslovakian, both of whom were large customers for Swedish ore. “Germany has made contracts to get ore from Austria, which has very ex- tensive high-grade ore mines in Eise- | herz, Styria. Still. Great Britain seems | inclined to do everything possible to help Germany get her needs in iron ore, hoping thereby that Germany will lift the pressure for former colonies. This idea also applies to other raw materials badly needed by Germany.” INVESTING COMPANIES NEW YORK. The greatest weakness occurred in those staples which recent Government, crop estimates showed to be facing a larger harvest than expected. The Associated Press weighted index of 35 important wholesale quotations dropped to 89.10 per cent of the 1926 average from 89.95 a week ago and compared with 80.46 last year. There were 16 setbacks to six ad- vances among the commodities making up the index. The remainder were unchanged. Live stock prices pushed into new high ground for the year, an upturn in cattle outweighing a dip in hogs. The rising trend in this group has been setting new peaks regularly during the last month. Improvement stemmed principally from a strong de- mand meeting a sharply curtailed supply. Cotton and Grains Sag. Official crop estimates in cotton and the grains sent quotations reeling. At roughly 15,600,000 bales, the Govern- | ment cotton figure was 500,000 bales | higher than traders looked for, and the staple fell to around 10!, cents a pound. A month ago it was 13 cents. | Corn, wheat, oats and rye also gave | ground before a wave of selling | touched off by crop forecasts. Live stock and grains have been pursuing diverging paths for more than | a month. During this period live stock has been setting new highs and agri- cultural staples new lows. The easing industrial tempo was re- flected in prices of those commodities used by producers. Hides, rubber, tur- pentine, lumber, antimony and tin were down. Textiles Move Down. Trade quarters held that while man- ufacturers’ stocks of principal items were not burdensome, they were suffi- cient for the current declining rate of activity. Textiles slipped, with a dip in cotton cloth offsetting a slight bulge in silk. Demand in the cotton cloth market has been stagnant for weeks, the result largely of overhanding inventories. The rate of production was slashed sharply this week, a reflection of the | inability of processors to move stocks, in the opinion of most analysts. ‘The wholesale cost of food was lower as heavily weighted flour, lard and coffee receded. Eggs, sugar, cocoa andL butter were higher, although not eriough to offset the other three. The index, with its components based on 1926 as 100, compared as | follows: Previous Year 8% R0 | Aug, 12 35 commodities 10 | Industrial sm 09 Ron-terrous metal 2 2 *New 1937 high. tNew 1937 low.
