D—6 R CAROLINA BANKS DRAW TOURISTS Manteo’s Virginia Dare Cel- ebration Set in Unspoiled Scenes. MANTEO, N. C., August 14 —There s this season more than a good ex- cuse for Eastern Seaboard travelers to dip into a country most of them have heretofore missed—the Pamlico and “Banks” country of North Caro- lina—for across the sound on Roanoke Island, is Manteo's “Birth of a Na- tion” celebration. Manteo's Virginia Dare celebration is easy on the vacationist's nerves, and so is the rest of the Pamlico eountry. At restored Fort Raleigh, reached by hard-surfaced roads from any Eastern point, there is none of the carnival atmosphere of the usual *“exposition.” Three nights a week Paul Green's Unusual symphonic drama, “The Lost Colony,” is presented at an open-air theater built upon the very beach which first received the imprint of English settlers. Of the play, visiting critics say it will head both for Broad- way and Hollywood after its all-Sum- mer run at Manteo. Like “‘Green Pas- tures.” it is compounded of drama, music and costumery, and its theme purports to explain the mystery of Sir Walter Raleigh's ill-fated colony which 350 years ago vanished into the wilderness. No High-Pressure Hawkers, But the case-hardened tourist will| ward” community. The islanders have not discovered, and apparently do not care to learn. how to “gyp” the visitor. At Fort Raleigh—where there are re- stored forts, stockades, blockhouses and a museum of relics gathered from all over the world—there are no ped- dlers and souvenir hawkers. There is not a merry-go-round, a balloon salesman nor a professional | photographer on the island and, mira- cle of miracles, pop costs only & nickel 8 bottle. Manteo refuses to be “upsot” by a celebration—it has seen too much spectacular history made. The sightseer, therefore, has a de- eent chance of having a vacation un- molested at Manteo. On the way in to the island many tourists are visit- ing, for the first time, the Wright | memorial beacon, which is open to the | public all the time—climbing to the top of that tower atop Kill Devil Hill from whence the intrepid Wright brothers launched their frail plane for | the first true airplane flight. The hill itself, once a sand dune, has been moving majestically up and down the coast ever since until at last it was anchored by laborious planting of sturdy grass and shrubs. The business of anchoring geography is still going on around Kitty Hawk and Hatteras. In the Pamlico country are Bath, | oldest town in North Carolina: Eden- ton, where the State capitol once etood, and New Bern, history drenched ESORTS. But there are no automobiles. Along with Ber- muda, it bars them. Chicago's Charter Jubilee stages its most brilliant spectacle, the “Carnival of the Lakes,” next week with a mile- long “Neptune's parade” of gayly ighted yachts and a novel, disappear- ing water ballet by 72 dancing and swimming girls. The evolutions of the ballet end as the lines of girls march down into the waters of Lake Michigan to reappear again in new costumes for the next number. After five ballet scenes the whole ensemble vanishes beneath the water as two cascades roar and trumpets blare. Between the acts a wall of water 200 feet wide and 100 feet high shoots —_—m seacoasts in the world. For 65 miles the beach is unmarred by a bath house, a cottage or a hot-dog stand— nothing except beautiful beach, blue water, a golden sand and the occa- sional hulk of a half-buried wreck. On the other side of the strip—the sound side—are a few fishing villages and the inevitable Coast Guard sta- tions, of course. Rondanthe, where the natives still observe “Old Christmas” (January 5) is a picturesque and iso- lated community, and one may also stop at Avon, and Hatteras. At Hatteras itself the Department of Conservation and Development has taken over the old lighthouse, tallest on the Eastern Seaboard, and has opened it to the public. Hatteras offers & lesson on the power of the sea. Once it stood 2 miles from the Atlantic. Now the sea has moved in until at high tide the waters lap its base. The new light has been erected farther inland. All along the country vacationists are enjoying boating, fishing and surf bathing, either at the numerous re- | sorts on the coast or at isolated spots | of their own choosing. .
