REAL ESTATE. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., SATURDAY APRIL 24, 1937. - US.LOSS BY FIRE SEEN INCREASING Sharpest Upturn Since 1920 Reported by Insurarnce Company. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 24—In- dication that the Nation's fire losses may have taken the sharpest upturn last year since 1920 was the basis for & suggestion today by the Continental Insurance Co. for increased vigilance on the part of property owners regard- ing all factors bearing upon fire hazard end fire prevention. “Preliminary estimates by the Na- tional Board of Fire Underwriters put the 1936 fire loss 17 per cent above the final loss estimates for 1935, said Curtis W. Pierce, vice president. “Unless the 1936 loss figure is re- vised downward in the final adjusted estimates, it will show the greatest percentage of increase in 16 y-ars “Indications are that the 1936 loss will be the greatest of any year since 1932. Moreover, it was the first year in which there was an increase over the preceding vear since 1032, It marked the reversal of a five-year downward trend in losses. “There are a number of possible ex- Wanations for the rise in the loss last year, though it is doubtful that any ¥xplanation could actually justify so great an increase. “Expanding employment and indus- trial activity was undoubtedly a fac- tor. Rising values of all types of buildings and stocks of goods are an- cther cause for the higher figure.” Discussing the rise in values, Pierce #dvises property owners to consider carefully the probable replacement costs in today's markets of property | which might be destroyed by fire. In | many instances, he noted, insurance would be inadequate, if based on values fixed at depression levels. In the actual work of fire preven- | tion, he asserted, higher values and increasing industrial and commercial activities should occasion increased interest. Study of the National Fire Protection Association’s analysis of 43 fires, each of which caused loss in excess of $250,000 during 1936, showed inferior construction, excessive areas, etc., as contributing factors in 23 in- stances. cted vertical open- | ings alded ad of 8 of the blazes. Delays in giving the alarms were partly responsible in 20 cases Thirteen of the fires involved highly | combustible materials, or excessive | amounts of burnable stocks within the | buildings. Four involved flammable | liquids. Flood waters hindered the fire fighting at three of the blazes. | In six instances, there were inadequate water supplies or poor hydrant dis- tribution. 1In three cases, the large loss was due to the spread of forest fires, along a wide front. Rules for the guidance of the man who is about to install air conditioning equipment, as adopted by the United States Department of Commerce and the National Better Business Bureau, have just been reaffirmed by the Fed- eral Trade Commission in a decision against a Chicago manufacturer, William B. Henderson, executive vice president of the Air Conditioning Manufacturers’ Association, nounced here today. For the -store, office, factory or home, the investor, to obtain true air conditioning, must get at least these services, the authorities declare: For Summer, the air muat be vooled, dehumidified and circulated. For Winter, it must be heated, humidified and circulated. Throughout the year, in addition, the air should be cleansed. £ny equipment performing less than these minimums is net true air con- ditioning. Homes and business estabiishments are adopting approved air condition- ing installations in new record vol- ume, according to Henderson. In- stalled value of equipment sold by the association members this year is running far ahead of the same months in 1936, an- T e I Picture Yourself Happy In This ) Comfortable and Brick Bungalow i oot oW 1005 Flower Ave., Takoma Park, Md.
