REA L ESTATE. THE EVENING - VIRGINIA PARKS SOON O BE OPEN State Commissioner Hall Sees Double Attendance This Summer. Bix State parks in locations that make them easily accessible to tour- ists and residents alike in every sec- tion of the Old Dominion will be opened in Virginia late this Spring, it was announced by Wilbur C. Hall of Leesburg, chairman of the State Oommission on Conservation and De- velopment. It is expected the attendance in the parks this Summer, which will| mark their second season of opera- tion, will be more than double that of | last year. Numerous improvements have been made at each park, and there are now 65 cabins throughout the system, all being completely equipped and furnished, having showers, running water, beds, mat- tresses, pillows and all other neces- sary furnishings. Several cabins also have electric ranges and hot water heaters. Credit for Virginia's system of | parks will always be a monument to| the vision of William E. Carson, for- mer chairman of the State commis- sion, Hall stated. The movement to | establish the Shenandoah National Park spurred the development of the | series of State parks. Citizens in other parts of the State, watching the growth of the Shenandoah Park, became interested in the establish- ment of parks in their own localities. Three Mountain Parks. Three mountain parks are included in the series. They are Douthat, near Clifton Forge: Hungry Mother, near Marion, and Fairy Stone, near Bassett. The other parks in the chain are Staunton River, near South Boston; Westmoreland, located in the | county of the same name, and Sea- shore, near Cape Henry. Westmoreland Park is the most | easily accessible to the northern part | of the State. It is located between | ‘Wakefield, the ancestral home of | George Washington, and Stratford, | the birthplace of Gen. Robert E. Lee, on the Potomac River. The park embraces approximately 1266 acres and has a water front of more than a mile The beach is described as one of the most perfect in the East. Cliffs| located back a short distance from | the shore make the park most pic- turesque. Douthat Near Capital. Of the mountain parks, Douthat | is nearer the National Capital. It is about 5'2 miles northeast of Clifton | Forge in the heart of the Alleghany Mountains. It includes almost 5,000 | acres and provides some of Virginia's | most beautiful mountain scenery. | Adding to the charm of the section is a 78-acre lake, on the shore of which is being constructed a beautiful sand bathing beach. Two large picnic areas have been set aside in the park, making it especially attractive to those who prefer eating out of doors. | Located in Patrick County, 12 miles west of Bassett, is Fairy Stone Park, a second mountain park. The park, | which likewise embraces about 5,000 | acres, is named after the so-called fairy or lucky stones found in great abundance in the region.
