Cc—6 BOOK CALLEDAID TOHOME BUILDERS Authors of “Designed for Living” Offer Volume of Advice. Declaring the desire to build a home as insistent as the desire for marriage, Elizabeth Gordon and Dorothy Ducas, authors of The Star’s “Designed for Living” column, have written a book to aid new home build- ers and have entitled it “More House for Your Money.” The book has just been published. Publishers commend the book as a practical aid, claiming that its use will make possible an average saving of at least $250 to the new home builder, through avoidance of errors in planning and the selection of ma- terials for building. “You cannot build a better home until you know what makes a home better,” the authors write in the in- troduction. “A house must fit the family and ts purse. “Forget styles, forget trimmings for the nonce, and design a house from the inside out instead of the outside $n. The exterior will shape itself about the rooms. Mostly it can be made any style and the inside will not have been moulded to fit artificial boundaries.” Advising employment of a con= tractor and an architect who in- spire confidence, the writers deal first with adequate house plans, then with how much to spend for home and how to finance it. Methods of construc- tion and decision on materials to use for wall construction of the house is next important. Taking into consideration the fact that costs of building materials fluc- tuate constantly, they offer “Construc- tion Recipes” to show that walls may be built of masonry just as economic- ally as walls of less permanent materi- als. Figures provided by a Brooklyn contractor, who used the grades of material he considered adequate, give comparative costs for a square foot of wall, as follows: Concrete block (8 inches thick) painted with portland cement paint, 63 cents; wood framing, sheathing and | clap boards, 60 cents; wood framing, | theathing and cement stucco, 63 cents; concrete block (8 inches thick) | and stucco, 65 cents; concrete block (12 inches thick) and stucco, 75 cents; monolithic concrete, painted, 75 cents; hollow tile (8 inches thick) and &tucco, 78 cents; wood framing and eheathing and brick veneer, 91 cents; eolid brick (8 inches thick), 97 cents; concrete block (8 inches) and brick veneer, 97 cents; hollow tile (8 inches) &nd brick veneer, $1.08, and solid brick (12 inches thick), $1.15. The writers express wonder that | ooncrete, “the cheapest material in many parts of the country,” has had such slow acceptance and venture the opinion that early concrete block was made “to look like natural ragged stone instead of what it was—man- made, poured stone.” to account for it. Today, they add, concrete is very much in the ascendancy. Permits (Continued From First Page.) erete block cold storage plant, 1431 Okie street northeast; to cost $75,000. Charles D.
