Cedar Grove | DAILY SIX months be- fore, George Ainslee wouldn't have thought it within the rea!ms of credibility. Had any one suggested the very possibility that he would find himself suddenly, completely head over heels in love with a young and undeniably care- free girl who seemed not at all averse to his at- tentions he would have laughed. And doubtless, the laugh would have been a decorously conser- vative laugh, such as befitted the dignity of a suc- cessful, middle- aged broker. But the sudden- ness of the realization failed utterly to sweep Ainslee off his mental bal- ance. The thought had come to him | that the queer, unfamiliar feeling of unrest he had begun experiencing was nothing physical. His physician had | assured him that he was in perfect | | health, and enviably young for his | 40-odd years. It couldn’t be business either. His | brokerage firm was in excellent con- dition. Thus Ainslee, as was his habit, carefully eliminated all factors from the problem until but one was left that was significant. Jessica Worth was the disturbing element! Ainslee never made any serious mistakes, which probably accounted | for a major proportion of his suc- cess. Likewise, he always rational- ized things before he made a major move in any direction. He thought the matter over for two weeks be- fore he said anything to the young lady. “It seems incredible,” Jessica told h\m over the candlelighted dinner | table at her apartment. “I mean, I had never thought of you as a pos- sible husband, George. We've had some good times, and I thought that was all I meant to you ... a relief from business!” “I thought so, too, Jessica. But now I see that I want you to be my wife, be more than just a pleasant playmate!” * ok ok % SHE looked at him for a long mo- ment, wondering if he was mak- | ing some sort of a joke. She decided | he wasn't. . . . George was tempera- mentally incapable of joking about such a serious matter! “I'll marry you on one condition, George,” she consented. *“You're over 40, and I'm 24. You must understand that you're taking a risk when you marry me, and allow for mistakes!” George smiled amiably rnd reached | in his pocket. Jessica gasped at the | size of the square-cut diamond in the | | ring he placed upon her finger. It | was characteristic that the ring fitted ! perfectly. don't think there will | be any mistakes to allow for,” he | grinned George learned a great many things | | during the first two years of their | marriage. One was that it was im- | mensely pleasurable to come home | from a grueling day at the office and find an ably kept and pleasant home | awaiting him instead of a lonely bachelor establishment. Moreover, he | found himself more and more in love | | with his wife as the days went by i * x % % JESSICA too, found many salient facts about their marriage be- coming increasingly apparent. Para- | mount among them was the fact that | a young woman eager for bright lights | | | stifled by the duty of staying home every evening and being a glorified household ornament for a too-old, though loving, husband. {O’LEARY SEEKS CHARTER | [FORYACHT ORGANIZATION | Bill Introduced in Congress for Group Aiming to Raise Boat- Handling Skill. With a maid and a cook, her duties were simple. And after all, though she did enjoy the company of pleasant young men, hadn’t she warned George fairly before their marriage what to expect? Ainslee listened in a calm disbelief when the first re- port reached him of her daytime activities. He refused to believe it. But when further, and more ex- plicit stories reached him he was forced to concede that something was decidedly wrong. And then he discovered that Jessica had been seen more than once coming from Vincent Gregg's office. * ok K % ’rllE knowledge galled Ainslee im- measurably. Not content with being his most dangerous competitor in the brokerage business, Gregg was now apparently competing with him for his own wife! Ainslee could have thrashed Gregg and enjoyed doing it. But he loved Jessica, and calmly for- gave her. She was still young and impressionable, with few defenses against the personable and experi- enced Gregg! No, he decided, he would say nothing to Jessica at all. He would find some way to eliminate the threatening snake from their domestic Garden of Eden without resorting to crude or ungentlemanly methods! A man who kept his head and reasoned dis- passionately about such matters would find an ultimate solution, he knew. Ainslee in the while that followed moved methodically. He had one of his salesmen subtly contact Gregg's best friend, Harry Donnel, who was employed at the office as a customer’s man. The salesman reported that he had had small success in that quarter. Evidently Gregg had cau- tioned his friend against divulging any office information . . . Ainslee knew his wily methods! * ox % X ULTI!\’[ATELY Ainslee hit upon the | very thing that he knew positively | gave him a weapon against Gregg. An Ainslee accountant had discov- ered, quite by accident, thet the Gregg office had been for some time | working off blocks of worthless blue= | sky stocks to their trusting customers. Ainslee investigated to make sure and | then notified the proper authori- ties . . .! Somehow all of Ainslee's carefully made plans went awry. The police | made a sensational investigation and | of course found plenty wrong. But instead of Gregg young Donnel went to jail! And queerly enough, at the trial, Donnel maintained that he had floated the worthless stuff without Gregg's knowledge. Even Ainsiee was forced | to admire the young man for shield- ing his friend. But he sa¥® with an inner satisfaction that Jessica was fr!ghtened at what had nearly oc- | curred. The matd assured him that she stayed home during the daytime now! It was true that Jessica had gotten a fright. “A public scandal would she told her inti- mate friend over the telephone. “But I wonder how George found out that I was in love with Harry Donnell” (Copyright, 18 $31,167 CONTRACTS LET Contracts totaling $31,167, an- nounced yesterday by the Bureau of Yards and Docks, Navy Department, include an item for alterations at the Marine Barracks here for $13,616, awarded to Heman S.
