Parents Hold Mass Meeting. Herbert complained that Roslyn school children are being taught indi- viduality and originality at the ex- pense of fundamental knowledge. He sald when class begins the teacher says: “Well, children, what shall we do today?” Then, said Herbert, little Johnny in the back row pipes up: ‘I saw & movie about Africa. Let's do Africa!” “So teacher racks her brains to think what she knows about Africa,” continued Herbert, “and maybe they'll transform the class room into an African jungle village. It's like play- ing house all day long.” Herbert also said that teachers in the Roslyn system “psychoanalyze the poor kids so much that the children get the impression they are only sub- Jjects of a scientific experiment——a kind of educational guinea pigs.” Another oppositionist, Mrs. Mary White, a former teacher, declared: “Progressive education is putting the home into the class room—and the class room into the home, where the parents have to teach even the simplest fundamentals because their children cannot get them at school. Couldn’t Tell Time. “One 9-year-old girl in the fifth grade couldn’t even tell time. She was supposed to go home at $ minutes to 5, but she had to go and ask what time it was—with the clock right in front of her on the wall. “I asked some 16-year-old junior high school boys how bills in Con- gress became law. They just sat there and looked blank. I asked them if | they read the newspaper to keep up on current events. They said no, they Just read the funnies.” Mrs, White said she asked a similar group about President Roosevelt's Su- preme Court program. *“One didn’t know anything about it at all,” she said. “Another said President Roose- velt wanted to reduce the court to five members, and still another that he wanted to add two members.” (Tomorrow: A defense of pro- gressive education.)
