VCTIS OF AUTES CONPLCATEPEACE Wartime Surgery Turns to New Need, Clinic Speaker Declares. by the Assoctated Press. VENICE, Fla, April 1.—The haz- ards of the highway are a major problem of the peacetime world, Dr. Fred H. Albee, noted World War | surgeon, said yesterday. | Automobile accident victims often | become a problem for neurologists and ‘ 8 psychiatrists who must assist in re- modeling their lives, Dr. Albee said. | Discussing results of a surgeons’ clinic here, he said medical men are! gaining a fuller understanding of the | [ aftermath of automobile accidents | and realize the need for careful treat- ment and rehabilitation. He said the surgery of peace does not vary much | from the surgery of war. Both shell- shock victims in wartime and shock victims in motor crashes often require vears for rehabilitation, the surgeon | Evil of Civilization. | Dr. Albee founded the Florida Med- | ical Center here and gained wide rec- | < ion for his services as a surgeon g the World War. | “Automobile accidents apparently | are an uncontrollable evil of modern | civilization,” he said. “The medical profession faces the necessity of bend- ing every effort toward rehabilitation perfection of technique to return their | victims to useful life. “A severed nerve in the arm or leg of a master mechanic may mean the loss of an occupation a lifetime has been spent in attaining.” Brains Often Impaired. He told of States that have found- i rehabilitation commissions which and return victims to some form | ful occupations. Surgeons addressing the clinic said there is need for study of brain and spinal injuries “left in the wake of speed and recklessness.” Dr. Oswal P. Campos of Brazil told of 700 skull fractures, which indicated the neces- sity of careful diagnosis of injuries. In some cases, he said, X-ray ex- aminations showed only one fracture of the skull whereas the victim had suffered several spinal injuries, he said, were similarly overlooked. STAYS AT BELVOIR Lieut.
