Poetry in Your Taxi 67-YearOld Driver Versifies on Diver- sified Subjects. FRED C. DOLCATER, Poet-taricab driver, in the throes of composition. —Star Staff Photo. BY WILLIAM A. BELL. RED C. DOLCATER, 67-year- old taxicab driver, affords his passengers unique motoring entertainment. Instead of turning on a radio, he turms on poetry—his own. Perhaps you've ridden with this gentle, silver-haired bard and had him turn to you and inquire if you like poetry. If the answer is in the affirmative, he will recite one of his Jyrics, composed, probably, between the time he picked you up and the beginning of the almost inevitable oonversation between driver and fare. As Dolcater’s cab threads through ¢ am. traffic, passengers may hear something like this: “To lyric notes from the lute she played, With perfect rhythm she danced and swayed; Like a butterfly bowers A-sipping nectar from the flowers. mid the leafy *“Then love's sweet song she sang to me, It made me sigh, for I could see Bly Cupid, the archer, drawing near; Then I awoke, here.” Poems for Seasons. Or Dolcater may render another of his *“vision” poems, “Visions of Twilight” or “Visions of Dawn.” If #t’s Thanksgiving, hell have a ‘Thanksgiving poem; if the Christmas season, & Christmas poem. This for Spring was motoring poet has one for almost |- any occasion. Do you disapprove of the President’s Supreme Court pro- posal? Doleater, approaching the com- pulsory retirement age demanded by Mr. Roosevelt, will sympathize with | your opinions as follows: “The President sent a message to Congress one day, ‘Which had little respect for his elders, they say; No mention was made to spend wise or take heed, The gist of the measage was speed, speed, more speed. “In the old fireside days we had plenty to say, But said it in a quiet, conservative way; @ood neighbors were plenty and our wisdom we got From grandpa and grandma, & helped us a lot. *“When we'd go for a ride we would harness the steed, And put on a bridle to hold down the speed. Now these airplane buggies go rush- ing like mad, And those juggernaut autos—Oh, isn't it sad! *While each State has its Governor to hold down the steam And the U. S. a Senate to mop up the cream, ©Our Supreme Court is needed to put on the brakes, And the one we have now has got what it takes. “Oh, be careful, be careful, before adding the six ©Or we may be like Europe—in ons heck of a fix. Let's stop, look and listen, that Old Glory shall be Ever floating with pride o'er the land of the free.” If in sardonic mood, the Dolcater ger can ask for and obtain: “The lure of life, a woman's smile, 1t makes man tarry for awhile, ‘Till rancor turns love into bile, + Then comes the alimony trial.” Driving Four Years.
