Smathers, a “holdout” from the United States | Senate, because the Democratic party | found it expedient to keep him here, is ready to surrender his $500 State legislative post for the $10,000 job in | Washington. | He said today he would close “in about & week” his desk in the State | House, where he has been besieged by | 1obbyists for State and national causes. | “I'm going to be in Washington | when the fight starts on the Supreme Court,” the former Southerner drawled. Smathers remained in the State Senate because his presence gave the Democrats 10 votes in the 21-member Senate. DETROIT, February 25.—A Federal grand jury yesterday indicted the Consumers Power Co. of Jackson, Mich,, two of its officials and 14 other persons on charges of conspiracy to violate the internal revenue laws, ‘The Government contends the com- pany devised a plan to supply gas at commercial rates to still operators.
