CHEVY CHASE GROUP OPPOSES ABATTOIR Limitation of Bus Stops Held Means of Securing Better Express Service. Opposition to construction of an abattoir in Benning by Adolf Gobel, , Inc, was expressed in a resolution adopted last night by the Chevy Chase Citizens’ Association meeting in the E. V. Brown School. The action was taken because the proposed slaughter house was classi- fled as one of the so-called “heavy in- P ——— e e e L et e e e b E e e e e dustries,” hence against the ideals of most civic groups, according to Executive Committee. Lewis Radcliffe introduced the measure. Complaints against wet floors on busses were made by a member, who said this condition is both unhealthy and dangerous to physical safety. A letter was directed sent the Capital Transit Co. More express service was asked by | Morris Spawn in a resolution directing this problem to the Executive Commit- tee's attention. Spawn suggested that the service provide for no pick-up service from the busses between K street and Taft Bridge on the north- bound trips. One other measure affecting transit problems was introduced by Fred A. : A Gift “Natural”! SPARKLET SYPHON Tt makes perfect carbonated THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. The caliber of the enlisted men com= posing the Regular Army and Navy of today, records show, has improved greatly in recent years, partly as a result of the depression, which kept ks Hours to Study thousands of well-educated young men out of work and permitted re- cruiting officers to choose from men with full high school and college training. “At Bolling Fleld there is a par- ticular tendency of the men to achieve a higher educational standing,” it was reported. “The educational facil ities in the city of Washington offer opportunities that are hard to turn away, and any spare time can be put to good use by those who have & desire to better themselves.” Washington schools offer classes, both day and evening, for the benefit of Government workers, and the Air Corps enlisted men are taking advantage of these classes. Of the half-hundred Bolling Field enlisted men who are enrolled in lo- cal schools, & majority are in the evening classes at the local public schools. A large percentage of the number has taken up the study of law. Next in line in popularity with the en- listed men of the Air Corps at the local post are stenographic and busi- nes courses. Several of the men are pursuing & regular college training course to- ward a degree at George Washing- ton University or at Georgetown Uni- versity. Others are continuing high- school courses which they dropped to enter the service or are taking re- view courses to “brush up” before going on to higher courses of educa- tion. “Through these advantages,” it was explained, “the enlisted men at Boll- ing Field are daily raising their edu- cational standard, and thereby their social standard, and are better pre- pared to keep up with the technicali- ties of their work and the opportuni- ties of modern times.” Bolling Field has contributed & number of men to the Air Corps Training Center, Randolph Field, e e e e e T T e T T T e e e e e e e e e e e e e Texas, where they have taken aviation training and received commissions as officers.
