December 17— Cornell University physicists an- nounced yesterday the completion of what they termed the “lightest port- able telescope of usable astronomical size in the world.” The main future of it is & 24-inch, 230-pound glass mirror, poured at the Corning Glass Works from the same ER T T o 2 S SN 2 S N e S S S SR S A T S S S SR S S S S S S SR SR S S SR S SR SR S SRS S S melt as that which went into the huge 200-inch, 20-ton mirror for the world’s largest telescope at Mount ‘Wilson Observatory in California. Samuel L. Boothroyd, professor of astronomy, and Dr. R. W. Shaw, physics instructor, designers of the new small telescope, said the instru- ment was light enough to be trans- ported “to any point where atmos- pheric conditions are most favorable.” The mirror will be coated with aluminum and will reflect the light “gathered” on it to the “eye piece” 8 feet away. The girders of the frame are of a light metal and weigh 20 pounds each, light enough, the professors said, for men or a packtrain to carry. Prof. Boothroya sald the telescope probably would be put to its first test at Flagstafl, Ariz. The mirror, he asserted, is accurate to one three hundred thousandth of an inch. o Dance Until Pay Is Raised. As a protest against & reduction in | junior warden; Martin H.
