Winding up 37 years of prosperous existence today. the Union Trust Co. starts its thirty-eighth year tomorrow under the leadership of Ord Preston, who has served the bank as pres- ident since the late Edward J. Stellwagen re- tired from bank- ing activities after heading the §nstitution for $hree decades. Officials of the trust company re- port & highly sat- isfactory year and are expect- ing a repetition of growing busi- ness in 1937. The Jast report to the controller of the currency revealed total deposits of $0,798.891.08, but since then deposits have crossed the $10.000.000 mark and en December 15 stood at $10,409,290.32. The Union Trust has capital of $2,000,000, surplus of $500,000 and undivided profits amounting to $388,- 143.95. In addition to President Pres- ton, the other officers of the bank include: George E. Directors of the Liberty National PBank have declared a dividend of | $250 a share on the capital stock, | Ord Preston. payable January 15, 1937, to stock- holders of record at the close of busi- ness January 7, President M. Ten shares of Mergenthaler Linto- type sold at 56 on the Washington Btock Exchange today, 100 shares of Columbia Title Co. moved at 13! and Carpel Corp. sold at 25. Capital Transit stock appeared on the board on a six-share sale at 133g. Peoples Drug Stores preferred came out today for the first time in some ‘weeks, 10 shares exchanging owner- ship at 1121;. In the bond division Capital Trac- tion 55 got all the attention, $1,000 being transferred at 923;. It is an- nounced that both the Washington and New York Stock Exchanges will be closed on the Saturday after Christ- mas. > Heard in Financial District. ‘The National Retail Dry Goods Asso- clation predicts that December sales will be 12 per cent ahead of last year, which will make the total only 14 per cent below the 1929 figure. Many in- dividual stores are running ahead of the 1929 records, the report adds. It is learned in the financial district that some Washington banks which have not yet declared a Christmas bonus have adjusted salaries upward during the past year.
