CULPEPER, Va., December 10 (Spe- cial) —Two county weeklies, the Mad- ison County Eagle and the Green County Record, which for some years were owned and operated by the late Bayne McDonald Bushong of Madison, have been acquired by James C. Bushong, who has come to Virginia after a long residence in the far South. The new owner and editor is a distant relative of the former owner, and al- though not a native Virginian, claims descent from many families of promi- mence throughout this section. .Blood Relation Theory Is Given A Severe Setback Gallinger Head Reveals Necessity to Go Out- side of Family. The common belief that members of the same family are closely related by blood came in for a distinct set- back today with the announcement at the District Jail that 210 prisoners have volunteered for blood transfus- fons during the past two years. Volunteers are sought at the jail only after members of the patient’s family, and frequently the circle of | near relatives, have been examined and their blood found dissimilar to | that of the patient, and therefore un- | suited to the operation. Human blood is classifed in four types, Dr. Edgar A. Bocock, superin- tendent of Gallinger Hospital, ex- plained. The type of blood of the donor must match that of the patient in order for the transfusion to be successful. Frequently five or six members of the family are tested without finding one whose blood matches that of the patient, and cases are on record of as many as 8 or 10 having been examined without finding a so-called “blood relative” whose blood is similar, he said. When all other sources fail, a re- | quest is sent to the District Jail for | donors, and to date no request has ever gone unheeded. Donors from the Jail have averaged about two a week during the past two years, and dur- ing November there were seven. One prisoner, Bernard L. Downey, has| given blood to two Gallinger patients during the past four weeks. Only unusually healthy persons can be | called upon so frequently.
