B the Assoctated Press. DETROIT, December 10. — Even with a production volume of around 20,000 units a day, the motor car in- dustry's assembly lines have not been able to overtake the accumulation of dealer orders and deliveries still are as much as three weeks behind. ‘The condition is a gratifying one to the production and merchandising di- visions of the industry, but assemblies are at the high level that inevitably follows new model introduction and probably will begin to cut into the heavy accumulation of orders the merchandising outlets have been piling up for weeks. With the deliveries of new cars currently as fast as the factories can produce them, used vehicles again are coming into dealers’ hands. Many of these are units upon which the retail division concentrated so much sales effort during the last 12 months. The dealers, however, expect the used car to present exactly the same problem it has for many years and to be ban- dled during the coming year with the | same success that was met in 1936, This meant the concentration of con- siderable effort in reconditioning vsed cars and promoting their redistribu- tion. The accumulation of new car or-| ders assures high-level assembly line activity for many weeks to come. The | general impression in trade circles is that some contraction may be ex- pected during February, but barring| circumstances at present unlooxed for, nothing like the falling off experi-| enced during the same montn this| year is feared. Penney (J. C.) Co.—November sales were up 4.3 per cent; 11 months, up 13.6 per cent; November, 1936, sales were highest for any November in company'’s history.
