B—10 #» AN WHO QUSTED BLANTON VISITOR Garrett Says He Does Not Plan Active Part in District Affairs. Clyde L. Garrett, the 215-pound Texas Circuit Court judge who will succeed Representative Thomas L. Blanton in the next Congress, does not plan to take an active part in Dis- trict legislative affairs. Garrett said he proposed to represent the interests of his constituents in the seventeenth Texas congressional dis- trist “in the most efficient manner.” Blanton, at the last session of Con- gress, served as chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee which framed the 1937 District appropriation act. But Garrett said he had no desire to succeed Blanton on the Appropria- tions Committee. “I have no particular interest in the affairs of the District of Columbia,” Garrett declared. “But if I'm put on & committee which considers District legislation, naturally I will be con- siderate of the District.” Although Blanton made much of the Communist issue in his cam- paign, Garrett said he had not even read the so-called “red rider” to the 1936 District appropriation act which his predecessor sponsored to keep public school teachers from discussing Russia and its form of government in the class room. Garrett explained he had no defnite program. “I made no extravagant promises in my campaign,” he said, “and I am pledged only to the principles stated in my platform. I have no mission to perform and no pet ideas.” For a week, Garrett has been in THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1936. Is she frilly? Is she tailored?
