NEWTON CHARLES WALTER SAGER, 5, DIES AT AGE OF § Deceased Was Union Army Veteran and Retired Pen- sion Office Employe. Newton Charles, 81, Union Army veteran and retired Pension Office em- ploye, died yesterday after a short ill- ness at his home, 459 Luray place. A native of Mansfleld, Ohio, Mr. Charles served during the last year and a half of the Civil War with the 102d ©Ohio Regiment. He taught school and engaged in farming for a short time after the war, later being employed by the Pension Office. His first work with the latter ‘was at its branch at Co- lumbus, Ohio. He came to Washington 23 years ago and worked at the main Pension Office until retired in 1920. Mr, Charles was a member of Kit Carson Post, Grand Army of the Re- public. He formerly was secretary of Lincoln Post, G. A. R., now dissolved. He leaves three daughters, Mrs. M. D. Balyeat of Lexington, Ohio; Miss Clara Charles and Mrs. Howard W. Berry, this city; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. His wife was the late Mrs, Mary C. Charles, Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the residence. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, SHERMAN FOWLER, 71, ORGANIST, DIES Succumbs in Alexandria—Well Known as Instructor in Music. By a Staff Correspondent ot The Star. ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 10.— Sherman B. Fowler, organist at St. Paul's Episccpal Church for the past 46 years and a retired Government worker, died this morning at the Alex- andria Hospital, where he had been a patient since last Saturday. He was 71 years old. A well-known music instructor here | for some 40 years, Mr. Fowler during | his life taught and directed the activ- ities of a large number of musicians and singers in Alexandria. He was retired from Government service two years ago. Mr. Fowler, who lived at 316 South Washington street, was employed for a long period of years in the War De- partment and Veterans' Bureau in Washington. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Bertha Fowler. Onme son, Dr. John Fowler, died four years ago at Johns Hop- kins University, Baltimore, where he was a member of the staff. Funeral arrangements are not com- plete. C. M. T. C. Came to Capital 14 Years Ago From St. Louis. ‘Walter Sager, 65, retired employe of the Interstate Commerce Commission, died Tuesday night after a long illness at his home, 1438 T street southeast. Mr. Sager, who was & chief aud- itor and account- ant in the I. C. C. Bureau of Valua- tion, was retired last April after 20 years’ service with the commis- sion. He came here 14 years ago agter serving at the commission’s fleld office at St. Louis. Mr. Sager was past master of the Anacostia Lodge of Masons. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Maude J. Sager; two daughters, Miss Ruth Sager and Mrs. Lester Eichner; a sister, Mrs. Thomas M. Craven, Cin- cinnati, and two brothers, Frank P. Sager, Alhambra, Calif, and Harry Sager, Los Angeles. GUILFORD, 65, ARCHITECT, DIES Mr. Sager. Believed Victim of Heart Disease | at His Residence Here. E. Frederick Guilford, 65, architect, died early today at his home, 900 Nineteenth street. Death was believed due to heart disease. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jane Penick Guilford, and a son and $wo daughters by a former marriage. ‘The son is Frederick M. Guilford, Hartford, Conn., and the daughters are Mrs. Frederick Cameron and Mrs. | Guilford Scott, both of New York. Mr. Guilford, a native of Water- bury, Conn., was a member of the Shakespeare Society, and the Men's Club of St. John's Episcopal Church, Sixteenth and H streets. Both he and Mrs. Guilford have been mem- bers of the Volunteer Choir at St. John's. The latter choir sings during the vacation of the regular choir in August.
