APER CHARGES BOYEOT TOEULD Labor Board Hearing in Seattle Publication Strike Opens Today. By the Associated Press. SEATTLE, September 10.—Attorneys for the Hearst Publications, Inc., yes- terday charged the American News- paper Guild engaged in a boycott against the Seattle Post-Intelligencer prior to the August 13 strike of guildsmen, which resulted in the paper suspending publication. ‘The charge was made in the Post- Entelligencer’s answer to the guild's complaint before the Regional Labor Relations Board. The answer asserted the guild had po lawful complaint against the Post-Intelligencer and no right to demand re-employment of any mem- ber of the guild’s Seattle chapter. Hearings Begin Today. Seeking reinstatement of two guild members discharged by the news- paper, hearing on the complaint was to begin today. Examiner E. S. Bmith and Malcolm Ross, Labor Board publications director, will hear the case. Both arrived yesterday from Washington. ‘The guild complained that Frank M. (Slim) Lynch, photographer, and Philip Everhardt Armstrong, drama critic, long-time Post-Intelligencer - employes, were discharged for guild | activity. It called a strike when the paper ignored its demands for their re-employment. The paper’s manage- ment contends the men were dis- missed for cause. Claim Boycott Continues. Yesterday's answer stated in part: “For a long time prior to the alleged committing of the suppoudi grievance upon which the complaint (the guild) seems to rely, the Amer- ican Newspaper Guild and its Seattle chapter had been engaged in a boy- cott of this respondent’s (Hearst Pub- lications, Inc.) business it publishing the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and had recommended that subscribers do not take the paper and that advertisers do not advertise therein. “Pursuant to this effort to boycott, the American Newspaper Guild had indulged in a campaign of vilification. | g “The boycott or plan to boycott |3 still exists and is being actively carried on,” it added as a ground for urging | § that the guild be stopped from its requested action and be adjudged in | § contempt of the board.
