* HAY-FEVER LAID TOSENITIVENESS Dr. Landsteiner Bares Ex- periments at Rockefeller Institute. By?ihe Associated Press. CAMBRIDGE, Mass., September 10. =Karl- Landsteiner, M. D,, who re- ceived the Nobel prize for discovery of the blood groups, today gave a new explanation of the cause of hay fever, asthma and more serious “allergies” by which people become ill because they are sensitive to some special food, drug or chemical substance. ‘The cause, he said, is a miscarriage of the body’s ordinary defense mech- anism against infectious disease. The experiments showing this were made at the Rockefeller Institute. Dr. Landsteiner reported at the biological section of the Harvard Tercentenary Conference of Arts and Science. Variety of Ilis. ‘The ills include migraine, muco- membraneous colic, purpura, nutri- tional eczema, hives, industrial dis- eases and various skin troubles. ‘The defense mechanism that may miscarry is the body's production of “antibodies” to produce immunity against infection. Foreign proteins injected into the body rouse this mechanism. If the mechanism fails & person may become “sensitive” to the irritating proteins. There may be more serious results. Today Dr. Landsteiner showed that chemicals act the same as foreign pro- teins. He showed that the chemicals can produce all the reactions known to proteins—a fact not known before. He disclosed that the variety of chem- ical irritants is virtually endless. Reactions of Some. “Some people,” Dr. Landsteiner said, “give reactions (to common, sub- stances) with solutions of one part in 100,000 or even one part in 1,000,000. Experimental animals have never shown so high a degree of sensitivity and as much individual variation. “This would indicate wider con- stitutional differences in man in con- trast to animals relative to the pre- disposition to sensitivity either in general or concerning particular com- pounds.” o Brown (Continued From First Page.) -— German people in the way Mussolini has claimed the devotion of all Italy. The answer to this mystery may be found in the fact that Hitler has subjected the whole of Germany to the Nazi party. S. men. He did not sleep a wink the whole night. Next day he appeared at the meet- ing, was almost curt with the Britishers, and, as soon as the formalities were over, got up and spoke without _interruption for four solid hours. He practically recited “Mein Kampf,” adding some pepper when he touched upon situations which he thought interested the Brit- ish particularly. Simon and Eden left the meeting with their collars wilted. The first attempt towards a German- British rapprochement failed because Hitler's feelings had been hurt. Now, his advisers—unlike Mussolini, | he has many—are doing their best to | prevent his feelings from being hurt. Politics His Only Passion. Hitler is a lonély man; he has no vices or habits. His only passion is politics. It is a dangerous thing to leave a man of this type too long in solitude. Sometimes his conversations with himself are dangerous. After a few days of comparative loneliness in Berchtesgaden he returns to Berlin | THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. Von Blomberg himself is still a power in the Reich because of his in. fluence with der Fuehrer. But he him- self i3 under the thumb of his prin- cipal assistants, the Reichswehr min- ister, Von Fritch, and the chief of stafl general, Beck. The latter is con- sidered the brainiest man in the army. He keeps himself in the background, but it is he who, through Blomberg, decides not only on the rearmament policies of Germany, but also the Reich’s foreign policies. Beck Calm Under Fire. When Von Blomberg was nervous about the effects of the remilitariza- tion of the Rhine, when Hitler was looking anxiously to his telephone, awaiting almost every minute the news that the French had crossed the border to stop by force the Reich from tearing up the last shreds of the Ver- sailles treaty, Beck was calm and posi- tive. “The French won't move, I know General Gamelin,” he assured his chiefs. *“He don't dare move, because he is overcautious and the French Army is not as prepared as he would like to have it. There will be no shots fired, don't worry.” Beck proved to be right. Gamelin, chief of the French general staff, pre- vented the Sarraut government from obilizing. But now, when the European situa- tion is strained to a breaking point, the' same generals who pushed Hitler to do things have become leery of his impulses. And they, with the foreign office advisers, watch that he does not remain alone too long. What Hitler does regarding the internal political affairs of Germany is a matter of lit- tle interest to them. The principal thing today is that der Fuehrer should make no mistakes to jeopardize advan- tages obtained with ease in the fleld of foreign affairs. Blomberg, the watchdog, is ever present to calm der Fuehrer’s moods. (Copyright, 1936, by The Evening Star Newspaper Co.) It may be that the Italian people have taken to Mussolini because he is & hundred per cent Italian himself. Hitler is not. And in a country like Germany where the people are ex- tremely nationalistic, the .fact that Hitler is an Austrian makes a dif- ference. One must not forget that for many years the Germans of the Reich looked down upon the Austrians, whom they considered fickle, unre- liable and, especially, poor fighters. It is not more than 70 years since the Prussians inflicted a smashing defeat on the Austrians at Sadowa. Although Hitler is the head of the German nation today, the Junkers and others have attempted to make him feel inferior on more than one occasion, but the majority of the Ger- man officers come from the old nobility and their loyalty to the “up- start” is due merely to the fact that he was the only man who had enough magnetism to wake up the German mation and make it the power it is today. This explains to a great extent the over sensitiveness of der Fuehrer. ‘When his feelings are hurt, he might do anything—from some unheard of regulations at home to a declaration of war. Simon’s Failure Explained. The story is told in Berlin why Sir John Simon failed so lamentable, when, as foreign secretary of Great Britain, he went to pay an official call to Berlin. This visit had been prepared in its most minute details by von Neurath and the foreign office. The date for the visit finally was fixed. Neurath used all the tact and diplomacy he had learned in his long diplomatic career to persuade Hitler merely to be present at the first conversations but to refrain from saying anything. Hitler understood and promised smilingly to be a good boy. 8ir John and Anthony Eden arrived 8t the Templehoffer airport. They . . were duly received by the foreign office % Electric representatives. Hitler, to show his r pleasure at the visit, sent a detach- WAFFLE 'RON ment of black shirts with an officer A.C.orD.C to render the usual honors. As the Ees 5 two British diplomats got off the plane Without Cord and Sir John was making his way towards the official automobile, Eden drew his driver'’s attention to the guard of honor and asked him to go by and take the salute. “I see no reason why I should do Main Stere, 1212 F St. N.
