Uncle Sam says, “Buy Now—Mail Early” B Father Walsh will be here tomorrow to autograph your copy of The Woodcarver of Tyrol The first work of fiction by George- town University’s noted vice presi- dent. A book that has a particular Jian Maddox of the charge of mur- dering Edward V. (Eddie) Killeen will be made upen her arraignment in Police Court Thursday for a pre-| liminary hearing into the slaying of the notorious Washington gambler. Police admittedly have been un- able to discover any flaw in the story of self-defense told by Killeen’s 35- year-old paramour, and defense at- torneys are carefully preparing for a vigorous endeavor to have Police Jus- tice Harold C. Smith quash the charge in his court.* State Satisfied, H. G. Wells (left), the British historian; Gene Tunney, former heavyweight champion, and Charles Chaplin (right), actor, pictured at a cocktail party in Hollywood given by Chaplin in honor of Wells. ~—Wide World Phote. ‘The State itself announced today that it is “satisfled” with Mrs. Mad- dox’s story that she shot and killed Killeen when he attacked her and threatened her life during a drinking bout at his Brookmont, Md., home two ‘weeks ago. State’s Attorney James H. Pugh declared that “so far as the county is concerned we are satisfied that the slaying occurred in the manner de- seribed by Mrs. Maddox.” 'It had been said unofficially that detectives spent days in an attempt to discover any possible flaw that might | exist in the woman's account of the| shooting and in dispelling any sus-| picion that the killing occurred in some other manner. Rumors Groundless. Underworld rumors that Mrs. Mad- dox might have been hired by rival gambling interests to “rub out”| Killeen, or was paid to secrete a gun- man in the Brookmont home which she and Killeen frequented, so that the overlord of Washington gambling might be disposed of, were proven groundless. The preliminary hearing was set for 10 o'clock Thursday morning after a conference between State’s Attorney Pugh and State Senator Stedman Prescott of Rockville and Harry Whealan of Washington, attorneys for Mrs. Maddox, who has been confined in the local jail since the slaying. The hearing was originally sched- uled for this week, but postponed be- cause Senator Prescott was engaged in & trial in Prince Georges County. e Steam Whistle Reaches 100.
