B—-12 = SEARGH CINTNUED FOR HEALTH SE "President’s Approval of $79,200 Allotment Spurs District Officials. Search for a site for a permanent health camp, or preventorium, for youthful tubercular patients was con- tinued today by District officials after President Roosevelt had approved a works allotment of $79,200 for opera- tion of such an activity. Fearing & proper site on Govern- _ment land may not be found, Mrs. Ernest R. Grant, managing director of the District Tuberculosis Asso- ciation, again voiced s plea for a {_donation of $5,000 or the gift of land for the purpose. Engineer Commissioner Daniel I. Sultan, while not directly associated with the District’s work rellef pro- gram, sent two officials to inspect District property at Blue Plains, where the Home for Aged and Infirm is located, to see if sufficient land there was available. Bishop and Street on Trip. The two were Assistant Engineer Commissioner H. S. Bishop and El- wood Street, welfare director. From three to five acres are needed. ¥ There must be proper provision for lighting, transportation and sewers, he explained. The health camp plan was one of several approved yesterday by the * President. The cost of all was figured at $248,086, toward which a cash sum ©f $100,000 was authorized. District officials may draw larger sums from grants already made for other works #programs. Other items given Presidential ap- #proval were development of a golf course at Anacostia Park for colored persons, to cost $150,500, this program being sponsored by the National Cap- ital Parks Office; production of play- ground equipment and operation of a Christmas work shop by the District Playground Department, to cost $18,386. For Tuberculosis Group. If built, the health camp would be maintained by the Tuberculosis Asso- ciation. It is intended to replace the present camp on the grounds of the Tuberculosis Hospital, Fourteenth and Upshur streets, where 60 children have been receiving care during Sum- mer months. That site has been termed inadequate and in poor loca- tion. The proposed new camp would be designed to care for about 120 ;¢children. e camp could be located at the site of the District tuberculosis sana- toria being developed at Glenn Dale, Md,, but officials say there are several | “objections to placing it there. One| is the distance from the city. DISCOVERER LAUDS VON MAYDELL ART Compares Russian Painter With | Hans Christian Andersen in Talk at Club. ‘The similarity between Hans Chris- tian Andersen and Baron Ernst von| Maydell, Russian painter, was de- | scribed to members of the Arts Club | last night by Von Maydell's “discov- erer,” Berryman Ridges, New York connoisseur. The spirit, humor and imagination of the famous fairy tale writer and| the artist are much the same, Ridges | said. He showed colored lantern slides of some of Von Maydell's water colors of flowers and insects, and Dr. Wil- liam Mann, director of the Washing- ton Zoo, displayed a few originals| which he has collected. Von Maydell fled from Russia dur- | ing the revolution and is now living | _in Italy. Ridges “discovered” his work | in Europe, where it has been shown at the Louvre and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Copenhagen, and brought samples to America. Von Maydell's water colors have been ex- hibited at the Corcoran Art Gallery, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Milwaukee Art Institute. Prominent collectors of Von May- dell's include Herminie, wife of the : former Kaiser; La Argentina, famous | dancer; Mary Garden, opera star; Mrs. Henry Ford, the Baroness Orczy, Rafael Sabatini, author, and Robert Woods Bliss of Washington Von Maydell's work is distinguished for its color, fineness of line, imagina- tion and humor. It has been hailed | by some critics as the best of its kind | since the sixteenth century. ', Mrs. Mitchell Carroll and Mrs. War- _ren N. Akers were hostesses at & din- < per preceding Ridges’ lecture. Mem- “bers of the Art and Archeology League ‘were guests of the Arts Club.
