B—14 %« GROUP DISCUSSES MEMORIAL SITES Defferson Project Plans Are Taken Up by Special Commission. Various sites proposed for ersction ©of a pretentious memorial to Thomas | Jefferson were discussed by the special commission created by the last Con- gress to formulate plans for the project, at a meeting Wednesday aft- ernoon in the old House Office Build- | ing. | John Russell Pope, famous Ameri- | can architect, explained the advan- tages and disadvantages of the differ- ent locations recommended to the commission, as well as the character of memorial adaptable. One of the three major locations is in the vicinity of the Tidal Basin on the south axis of the White House. The other is in the neighborhood of Seventh street and Independence avenue southwest. Lincoln Park and 8 site in Anacostia Park also were considered. Classical Architecture. Pope recommended that the me- morial be of fne classical architec- ture as a fitting tribute to Jefferson, | whom he described as “the father of American architects.” “Any one who creates a memorial to him,” he said, “must be in sym- pathy with the fine classical archi- tecture he represented.” Representative Boylan, Democrat, of New York, chairman of the com- mission, said the memorial should be second to no other in Washington. The site in the vicinity of the Tidal Basin, Pope explained, is ideal and a memorial there would carry out the McMillan Park Commission plan of 1901. That site; however, he added, would require “a very tender touch” and a memorial there would cost be- tween $8,000,000 and $10,000,000. Dr. Moore Participates. Dr. Charles C. Moore, chairman of the Pine Arts Commission, and mem- bers of the National Park and Plan- ning Commission participated in the discussion. In addition to Boylan the commis- sion is composed of Senators Thomas of Utah, Loriergan of Connecticut and | McNary of Oregon; Representatives Smith of Virginia and Culkin of New | York, Undersecretary of the Treasury Coolidge, Joseph P. Tumulty, secretary THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1935, to the late President Wilson; Hollins 8.
