DAISY WOMAN DIES rs. Martha Ann Bowman Ex- pires at Home. DAMASCUS, Md. December 6.— Mrs. Martha Ann Bowman, 70, widow of Maurice E. Bowerman, died sud- denly Wednesday at her home near Daisy, Md. She is survived by a son, Washington Bowman, and a daughter, Mrs. Norman Weber, both of Dalsy. JOHNSON, G.AR:LEADER, DIES Retired Federal Employe, 89, Was Prominent in Masonic Orders. Dr. Henry A. Johnson, 89, past com- mander of the Department of the Po~ tomac, Grand Army of the Republic, died yesterday at Soldiers’ Home Hos- pital after a long illness. A retired Gov- ernment employe, Dr. Johnson's combined mili- tary and civil service for the Government to- taled nearly 59 years. At the time of his retire- ment in 1920 he was chief of a di- vision in the of- fice of the adju- tant general of the Army, after serving continuously in that office since July 1, 1874, He had been prominent in the Masonic fraternity and other organizations. A native of Leonardtown, Md., Dr. Johnson enlisted at 15 in Company K, Dr. H. A. Subsequently, in 1865, he served as & member of the United States Mili- tary Railroad Construction Corps, at- tached to Gen. Sherman’s Army. In August, 1867, he again enlisted in the Infantry. Saw Reconstruction Era. He was detailed as clerk at the headquarters, Department of the South, at étlanta, Ga., and later was appointed chief clerk at headquarters, military district of Alabama, during reconstruction days in the South. In 1869 he again was honorably dis- charged for disability, due to the wound he had received at Bull Run, but again enlisted in the general serv- ice of the Army and was detailed as clerk in the office of the adjutant general. He continued there until ac- cepting a civil appointment. Long active in the Grand Army of the Republic, Dr. Johnson had served the Department of the Potomac in the offices of chief mustering officer, | junior vice commander and senior vice | commander, in addition to the office of commander. Likewise, he had held the offices of surgeon, vice commander and commander of the Sheridan Post, G. In the Masonic fraternity he was past master of the George C. Whiting Lodge, F. A. A. M, and past high priest of Mount Pleasant Chapter, Royal Arch Masons. Likewise, he had member of its Executive Committee | served as master of the Herndon, Va., lodge of Masons many years ago. Dr. Johnson was gradusated in medi- cine from George Washington Uni- versity, but never practiced. His home wus at 1446 Monroe street. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Olive C. Johnson, and two step- daughters, Mrs. Garnet C. Hartmann and Mrs. Ruby Kupper, both of New York City.
