NEW ORLEANS, October 24.—Ac- quittal of Abe Shushan on Federal charges of income tax evasion brought fresh enthusiasm today to the ranks of the political organization left by the late Senator Huey P. Long. “We think the verdict,” said De- fense Attorney Hugh Wilkinson, “vin- dicated the general feeling in New Or- leans that these income tax prosecu- tions have been nothing less than political persecutions.” After return of the verdict last night District Attorney Rene Viosca said the Government still could take civil action through an assessment by the Treasury Department. Shushan was charged with evad- ing payment of $71,153.52 taxes on an unreported gross income of $448,218.91 for the years 1929-33. “Rebates” Charged by U. S. The Government alleged he re- ceived huge sums as “rebates” from a construction company holding con- tracts with the Orleans Levee Board, of which Shushan was president. ‘The defense countered with testi- mony the money was contributed, through Shushan, to the campaign fund of the late Senator Long. State Representative Joseph Fisher was previously convicted on income tax evasion charges and is now serv- ing an 18-month sentence in At- lanta Penitentiary.. - Similar charges face Seymour Weiss, treasurer of Long's organization; | State Senator Jules Fisher, uncle of the convicted Representative, and the | Nelson brothers, contractors, who did | work during Long's $75,000,000 road- building program. Scores pressed around Shushan to congratulate him as the jury re- turned its verdict. Photograph Causes Uproar. Allen rocked Louisiana’s political structure yesterday by dis- closing that he had secretly qualified himself as a candidate for Unitec States Senator and one of his political associates, Louis L. Morgan, general counsel for the Louisiana Highway Commission, for Governor in the January Democratic primary. The qualifications were entered secretly shortly before midnight Mon- day, the hour the Democratic candi- dates books were closed. Allen in the eapacity as chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee receives applications of all candidates. He simply filed his own name and that of Morgan with himself. Until the Allen-Morgan qualifica- tlons became known, it was believed that the former Huey P. Long ma- chine stood solidly behind the ticket headed by Judge Richard W. Leche for Governor and Allen Ellender, Speaker of the State House of Rep- resentatives, for Senator. Spokesmen for the Allen administra- tion group claimed that Allen and Morgan qualified to protect the ad- ministration’s political interests in the event of the death, illness or with- drawal of Leche or Ellender.
