NEW YORK, October 19.—A sharp rise in Italian government and cor porate issues was the bond market's response to the favorable turn in the African war news today. United States Governments aver- uged better than 14 of a point higher. and while there was a certain amount of irregularity in domestic corpornt!on, bonds, there were many firm spots | and the main trend was upward. TItalian government 7s were in heavy demand and closed 67 points higher. | Milan 6125 were 7 points higher at | 47. Rome 6'.c advanced 57g at 49': and Public Utllity 7s improved 5 at ! 47. Other foreign bonds, especially | German 7s ancd other European gov- ernmental obligations, were generally higher. Recovery among United States Gov- ernment issues more than offset de- | clines of Friday, and while trading | was not active. the bonds that were | turned over changed hands at ad- vances ranging from 4-32nds to 10-32nds, with most loans in the higher brackets. . The turnover for | the day was less than $400,000. Domestic corporation bonds had both soft and firm spots. Rails and |4 industrials were more sensitive to | small buying orders tnan either utili- ties or low-yield issues, and the best gains were scored in these two divi- sions.
