|AN HAY, BRITISH SOLDIER, T0 SPEAK Will Address Dinner of Eng- lish-Speaking Union November 5. Maj. John Hay Beith, noted British soldier, playwright, novelist and teacher, will be guest of the English- Bpeaking Union at a dinner to be held ‘Tuesday, November 5, at the Willard Hotel, it was announced today by Mrs. Bruce Wallace, secretary of the union. Mrs. Wallace said the noted Brit- {sher will leave his London home to pay a visit to this country and ad- dress about a dozen branches of the English-Speaking Union, of which he was one of the original founders on July 4, 1918. One of the members of the union, a friend of Maj. Beith's for 40 years, recalled last week many of the events of the Englishman's varied career. Educated at the famous Scottish school, Fettes, and at Cambridge, Maj. ‘Beith taught for several years until his health broke down. Then he served in the World War ‘and for two years with the British war mission in the United Sttaes, dur- ing which time he visited every State and delivered 421 addresess. He re- tired from the army in 1926. Writing under the name of Ian| Hay, Maj. Beith has written many successful light comedies. His war book, “The First Hundred Thousand,” had an enormous sale throughout the British Empire. While at Cambridge, Maj. Beith | composed several songs, humorous | «B8cottish ditties, which he sang to his | own accompaniment. He never had | any published, because none were | written down, acording to his friend. His old friend says Maj. Beith has no use for politics. He is interested in several philanthropic institutions and is chairman of the British Society of Authors.
