Organized Reserves The establishment by 80th Division Headquarters of “battalion unit schools” throughout the division area, to meet once each month during the 1935-6 school year, October 1 to May 31, in centers approximating the battalion areas of Infantry and Field Artillery, will involve the 320th In- fantry, the 313th Field Artillery and the 315th Field Artillery, all District units. One school will be known as | “group schools” involving tactical in- struction of higher units, and the other, as “battalion school.” The subjects to be taken up by this group during the next nine months follow: October, advance and development for attack; No- vember, conduct of attack; Decem- ber, conduct of the attack and utili- zation of reserves; January, 1936, fol- low-up of withdrawal from action; THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, SEPTEMBER 15, 1935—PART FOUR. February, organization and occupa« tion of a defensive position; March, conduct of the defense; April, coun- ter attack, and May, withdrawal from action. The above conferences ‘ will be a2 continuing situation; each les- son or session of the school being so prepared that it is complete in itself. The course consists of troop-leading problems, and the employment of the: smaller units. These group schools will embrace a reinforced brigade’in attack, retirement, defense, counter attack, pursuit, etc. The battalion schools for the mem- bers of the above-described Distrjet regiments are primarily designed to establish and build up unit esprit and to hold conferences. on the basic principles of the arm. The subjects of the battalion unit school will in- clude the basic principles in the use of smaller units in preparation for the group conferences. Reserve Dis- trict battalion commanders will be used as instructors, each of whom will be required to submit their bat- talion schedules to 80th Division Headquarters for approval. Instruction will be by the confer- ence-discussion-examination method. The instruction to be pursued by the 320th Infantry Battalion School will be based along the following lines for the months indicated: October, map reading; November, scouting and patrolling; December, combat prin- ciples (platoon); January, 1936, solu- tion of map problems; February, com- bat orders; March, offensive combat (small units); April, defensive combat (small units), and May, tank oper- ations. The battalion school instruction for the two District Field Artillery regi- ments, 313th Field Artillery (75 mm. guns) and the 315th Field Artillery (155 mm. guns) wiil embrace the fol- lowing: October, organization and use of battery commander and bat- talion details; November, use of chem- icals; December, signal communica- tion; January, 1936, reconnaissance, selection and occupation of position; February, logistics; March, command and staff functions: April, combat orders, and May, tactical smployment of Field Artillery.
