. WOMEN CONCERTS PERMANENT PLAN Orchestra Conducted by Aaxnia Brico in New York Meets Success. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 1i. -New Work seems likely to have a permanent orchestra of women, after all. The fdea has been tried many times, and hitherto it has not succeeded for very long. The conductor is Aaxnia Brico. ZLast Winter she announced a series of three concerts by an orchestra entirely of women. Eyebrows went up, but so did ticket sales. At the end of the short series last Bpring, -Miss Brico announced a second season, this time of six con- certs, and in Carnegie Hall instead of the smaller Town Hall. Again eyebrows went up. They are still up, but they are in for a fall. Because, say those behind the movement, the concerts will be given as scheduled, beginning in November, and there will be audiences for them. A large and important committee Las got behind the indefatigable Wiss Brico, women's clubs all through the metropolitan area are getting benind the committee, and everybody feels sure of success. Chief Reason Financial. The chief reason they are sure is a financial one. With a modesty almost unique, Miss Brico, her man- sger, and her advisers, have scaied down the necessary budget to the point where a sold out Carnegie Hall will pay all the expenses. They want only to sell tickets, not collect large sums for the retirement of large deficits. Obviously there are no large salaries. Miss Brico is content with what would doubtless seem pinmouey to Arturo Toscanini. The players, some of whom lug their instruments long distances for the three weekly rehearsals, are paid the union rate | for their work, and no more. There is as little window dressing as pos- | sible, which is a great saving in a city where putting up a front is so| fiendishly expensive. Most of what Miss Brico has done seems to have been accomplished ve- cause Miss Brico has an inordinate capacity for believing. She believes in herself—in her ability, that is. She does not care much about clothes, she does not think it essential to do monkey tricks on the stage or in private life. She seems honestly convinced that she has a place as a conductor, and as gvest | with & number of American or- chestras she seems to have convinced both the musicians and the reviewers. For Musical Equality. She believes, equality for women. she is not a feminist. “I should like to see women ad- mitted on equal terms with men in orchestras and on the concert stage,” she said recently. “I believe the sverage of potential ability is about equal in the sexes, but I know that when a man and a woman try out for a job, though they be equal musically, the man usually gets the work. “Therefore, I believe my orchestra bf 86 women doing good work not ‘only has a musical niche to fill, out may do something to demonstrate the possibilities of mixed orchestras.” The determined, intense Miss Brico hhas quite a long row to hoe, however, and knows it. Almost without excep- tion, American symphony orchestras are wholly male. When there is an exception, it usually is the harpist, oddly enough. too, in musical But she :ays N N S Nature Makes Provisions.
