C—4 % HELP By Iazz An Exciting, Ultra- . AXND SITUATIONS BAND {8} Modern Love Story. By Wyatt Rundell. INSTALLMENT XXVIL HE face was half hidden by a | drooping hat brim, but r,h” figure, her carriage as she | danced, her every moment, | were hauntingly familiar. His eyes| glued themselves to the graceful, ‘ peach-frocked form, dancing so effort- | Jessly within the arm of a tall. rather heavily built man. They circled past before the orchestra, and the trem- | bling Paul saw Lhnt he had been mis- | taken. Furious once more at his eagerness, he sought to dismiss the surge within | him as one of relief, but failed miser- ably. It was disappointment—disap- pointment that the girl had not been Ina. He wanted to see her. Just to see her— | During the intermission after the broadcasting period he hunted fort Ray. and found him asleep in the | check room. Below, on one of the quiet room floors, he put the slum- | bering tot to bed and a half dollar | in the palm of a maid assured an attentive ear to possible sounds of distress in the night air. He returned to the roof. The crowd, now augmented by laughing supper parties, had become somewhat noisy. | They were plainly there to enjoy | themselves—eager for the music to| resume. They mingled from table to table. The band returned in hilarious mood, thanks to a nip or two in the smoking room; Bunton having disap- peared, Paul took over the stand.| They played superbly ballads in slow, ailky tempo, deftly arranged to alter- nate the rich harmony of saxophones | with the thin sweetness of muted brass. bringing them together eventu- ally in a flood of triumphant melody. | Steaming numbers in the heavy, ruth- | less rhythm that captures dancing feet and carries them along, despite distraught muscles that plead a truce. | Well-timed reversion to soothing waltz- | es that seemed to detach the roof garden from its earthly ties of steel and stone and suspend it in star-! pierced space to the vibrant lament of crying violins. Interspersed were bits of merri- ment when the press of dancers, around the orchestra stand, stood in their tracks, their bodies swaying in unison, eyes upon the white-clad men who cavorted for their amusement. Puny, a painful-stretched pink bras- siere around his bulky torso and a strand of five-and-ten pearls banding his forehead, sang “torch” songs in a throbbing falsetto with many im- | passioned poses. The entire bund; twanged ukuleles in a sprightly bit where Whitey agitated a skirt of grass over imaginary Waikikian sands. The | *glee club” filed to the front and warbled lustily. And the crowd voiced its approval with the gusto of those who, seeking diversion, find it before | them. Paul stood in front of the band, the music blaring in his ears. the slowly moving crush on the floor pass- ing like a giant eddy, insistent. clam- orous, lapping at his feet. He had a feeling of conspicuousness—of eyes upon him—blue eyes, long-lashed, that he feared—yet hoped to meet in the passing swirl of upturned faces. | His threading glance was thorough, | but hastily surreptitious and fil\ka\s‘ unavailing. She was not there. She had not come. A rush of disappoint- ment that would no longer be denied swept aside the flimsy rampart of in- difference that he had so laboriously constructed. Tomorrow night perhaps, he told himself. He found that reflection upon this Ppossibility cheered him even after the | loss of nine dollars fn a session of dice, held in the chambers of Jencks ! and Davidson, after the roof garden had closed. Bl The week passed, each night a repetition of the first. Paul's now con- fessed thirst for a glimsp of the girl who had been his wife, became an obsession. a taunting wraith that fled before him and whispered of some- thing unattainable; of privilege for- feited. In the hotel, on the streets, everywhere he went, he watched faces until his eyeballs ached and every #hining gold-touched head became a mockery. The rapidly appronchlng‘ date of their departure from Dnllu; filled him with dismay that grew to an unreasoning terror and clutched his heart with an icy hand. Only pride and a deep-rooted sense of a world lost kept his hand from | the telephone. In the privacy of his room, he found a somewhat maniacal |, Pl joy in thumbing the phone directory to the right page—but further than | that he could not go. Saturday night was their last in | Dallas. On Saturday afternoon Paul, | slumped in a huge chair in the lobby, | listlessly reviewed the ball scores ssi quoted by the News. Turning the‘ paper, a name caught his eyes and he | drew himself up abruptly in the mt.| His eyes devoured the item, an nn-’ nouncement of a garden party, given that evening by Mrs. A. B. Haynes | for her daughter Carol. who, having won distinction in her chosen profes- sion, fashion design, had resigned her responsible position in Kansas City, and would leave soon to open a shop | of her own in Los Angeles. Miss| Hayes, he read. was a Dallas girl, a graduate of Southern Methodist Uni- | versity, and had pursued her studies | at Chicago University, etc.. the usual ballyhoo of the local girl who makes | good. Paul rose from the chair and hur- ried toward the elevators, carrying the | newspaper in his hand. His “eyes gleamed strangely. and the elevator girl, usually a chatty soul. was startled | into an almost wordless ascent to the\ eighth floor. In his room, he sat upon the bed and again scanned the announcement | in the wrinkled paper. Then he| reached for the phone book and with | many verifying glances to insure ab- | solute accuracy, copied the address of Mrs. A. B. Haynes. This done, he lit a cigarette and lay back on the bed, and appeared to concentrate on a &pot on the ceiling. His eyes. though &till bright from inspiration. held the ruminative quality of one who, having evolved a plan of action, now probes it for possible flaws. At regular in- tervals, he extended the hand that held the cigarette over the edge of the bed and tipped showers of smold- ering ash to the carpet beneath. The’ shouting return of Ray from an afternoon at the movies with Puny and retinue, 30 minutes later, dis- turbed meditation that had become most profound. The Bunton’s played a dinner pro- gram from 6 to 8. At its conclusion, Paul hurriedly changéd clothes, rushed downstairs and commandeered a taxi. Twenty minutes later he was walking slowly along the sidewalk of an outlaying residential street, trying to look as if he belonged there despite ! ‘smppmg before a brick wall, | quartet tables, lawn, others shuffied cards with the | | him like & glove. | pening, the breathless acceleration of his | heart action. Directly across the street, from the rear lawn of an imposing mansarded dwelling, the roseate glow of Japanese lanterns tinted the growing darkness. Under them, distant figures moved, faint sounds of gayety floated to the silent | street. ‘The observer walked to the end of | 5 the block, crossed and returned past the house. Directly in front, he paused ‘ and in the shadow of the line of auto- mobiles parked there, strained his eyes toward the kaleidoscopic scene in the | garden at the end of the long side lawn. He concentrated on the spec- trum of colorful party frocks beneath the lights, but the distinguishing of faces, at that distance was impossible. | “No good,” he muttered. “Have t'get closer. He sauntered around the corner of | the block and, finding the mouth of the alleyway, entered it and started back toward the house. He proceeded wearily, guided by an occasional glimpse of the bobbing lanterns | through the trees of neighboring yards. he took his bearings, then pulled himself up the rough surface and dropped inside. He found himself separated from his objective only by a profusion of lilac bushes that formed a tall hedge between the two lots. The animated garden burst upon him at such start- lingly close range that he was, for a moment, fearful of discovery and crouched in the bushes like a fugitive. However, gaining confidence, he parted the mass of foliage and peered cau- | tiously through. He saw Carol—Ina's mother—Ina. She was sitting on & bench backed by a rose trellis that formed the boun- | dary of the garden, one of the viva- ciously chatting group of young peo- | at several rows of | Before them, set upon ple. the velvetry intentness of the bridge enthusiast. He caught the girl's hands and pulled her from the bench—she disarranged his tie in retaliation; they laughed into each other’s eyes while the attending | circle beamed approvingly. fore Paul could realize that it was hap- they were walking away—to- ward the house, where three or four couples were dancing on the roomy | side veranda to the strains of a radio that filtered from somewhere within. As he strained after them he saw Ina’s smile as she yielded herself to the tall young man's arms; their heads as they moved over the floor, perfectly matched: their plusure at their moment together. Paul became aware that he was Star “Want Ad” Branch Offices NORTHWEST.
