o CLEARINGS CLIMB TRANSACTIONS O SHARPLY IN . C. July Total Nearly $20,000,- 000 Above 1934—Gain Is Largest So Far. BY H. B. ROGERS. Business in Washington is on a steady upgrade, according to the re- liable indicator of the Washington Clearing House Association, which shows that during July this year, the increase in checks amounted to nearly $20,000,000, as compared with July of last year, the greatest gain recorded so far by any 1935 month. There was a seasonal decrease from June. ‘Totals for the first seven months of this year, as contrasted with the same period in 1934 show a cumulative gain of more than $109,000,000. Without an exception, every month in 1935 so far has shown a substan- tial increase over the comparative month in the previous year. The July gain, which is considered significant in view of the hot weather, and usually lagging business, shows that clearings during this month Jumped from $63,082,328.03 last year, to $83,003,060.99, a gain of $19,920,- %32.96. Largest Gain Recorded. This is ahead of the gain recorded by any other month so far, the nearest to it being June, which jumped from $66,669,995.66 in 1934 to $85,895,159.24 for a gain of slightly over $19,000,006. The cumulative figures show that for the first seven months, clearings increased from $419,750,829.01 in 1934 to $528,940,000.41 this year, a gam of $109,189,171.40. WHAT SYOCKS DID. Advances Declines Unchanged Total issues BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, July 31.—Led by pub- lic utilities, the stock market scored a broad advance today that recovered most of the ground lost in Tuesday’s decline. Gains among power and light shares ranged from 1 to more than 3 points and in other groups. with the exception of metals, from fractions to more than a point with many new 1935 highs established. Trading was the most active since May 28 at approximately 1,900,000 shares. The closing tone was strong. Among shares pushing through to new highs for 1935 were a long list of leading utilities, industrials and specialties, including National Steel, General Motors, Studebaker, Westing- house, Coca-Cola, Collins & Aikman, Murray Corp., Radio preferred “B,” People’s Gas, Consolidated Gas, North | American and Western Union. Gains among these and other active shares ranged all the way from !, to nearly 4, and while some issues slid back .| trifle from the highs, closing figures were well up around the tops. Other shares prominent in the up- ward march included such standard | rail favorites as Pennsylvania, New York Central, Delaware & Hudson, Santa Pe and Baltimore & Ohio. For some unexplained reason Union Pa- cific was a back-slider and sold as much as 11z points lower at one time, but came up slightly before the close. By the Associated Press.
