TRUEBILLS CHARGE WOMENSLEW LANG Mrs. Dunkel, Named With Mrs. Smith, Collapses at Jury Ordeal. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, July 31.—True bills ‘were reported voted today charging Mrs. Blanche Dunkel and Mrs. Evelyn Smith with the “swamp murder” of 4 Ervin Lang, Mrs. Dunkel’s son-in-law. { Lang's body, the legs hacked off . at the hips, was found wedged into ! » trunk in a Hammond, Ind., swamp. Charles S. Dougherty, assistant . Btate’s attorney in charge of the case, came out of the grand jury room with Mrs. Dunkel, last witness pre- . sented. ¢ He was followed in less than a j#minute by Edwin J. Spiro, indictment specialist, with word that the true bills had been voted. Composed After Testifying. # Mrs. Dunkel, once more composed, smiled as she was led away by a ; Police matron, and said: “I feel much better, now that I have told my story.” An hour before she haa collapsed in tears and hysterics wiile awaiting the call to the jury room, ier “iron nerve,” source of amazement to the prose- cutors, deserting her 1o the first time since her arrest, As the 43-year-old grandmother ! entered an ante room outside the jury chamber her knees suddenly buckled under her. She sank to the floor, screaming hysterically. The police matron in charge and several bailiffs carried her to a couch, where she lay sobbing. Sedatives were % administered in effort to restore her composure so that she could tell her . story to the jury. Mrs. Dunkel Finally Breaks. . 'The police matron said Mrs. Dun- kel, whose coolness during investiga- tion of her confessed part in Lang's garroting and butchering amazed police, had finally “cracked.” Mrs. Dunkel was taken into custody after Lang’s body, the legs severed at the hips, was found in a swamp near Hammond, Ind, on July 9. She . admitted, the police announced, that she hired Mrs. Evelyn Smith, laundry worker who once danced on the burlesque stage, to commit the killing for $500. Mrs. Smith, arrested in New York Baturday night after a Nation-wide hunt and brought back to Chicago yesterday, was said by the police to have admitted the Kkilling and cor- roborated Mrs. Dunkel’s story. Mrs. Smith Is Composed. In contrast to Mrs. Dunkle, Mrs. Bmith, 47 and scrawny, was completely composed as she was taken into t.hei State's attorney’s office to await her turn before the jury. When photographers asked her to | { pose, she did so willingly. “Am I still front-page news, boys?” she asked, smiling for the cameras. Mrs. Dunkle spent a sleepless night, her guard said. Josephine McKinley, fiance of Lang, was the first to go before the grand ; Jury. “I am ready for the chair. It's better than putting up with all that has happened. I might be better off dead than alive nowadays, anyway, and it wouldn't break my heart if Blanche (Mrs. Dunkel) makes thé trip with me,” Mrs. Smith told her keep- ers shortly before she faced the grand Jury. Preservation and extension of the merit system for Government em- ployes will be the outstanding sub- ject to be considered at the annual convention of the National Federation of Federal Employes early next month in Yellowstone National Park, accord- ing to TLuther C. Steward, president of the federation. This is assured after an analysis of 4 scores of resolutions proposed for con- * sideration by the national convention ¢ which have reached national head- quarters here. “It is highly significant,” President Bteward pointed out, “that so large a + proportion of the resolutions received thus far deal with the fundamental . question of maintenance of the civil service system. It proves conclusively ¢ that Government workers are awake to the very real menace of the spoils- man, and that they recognize that . only through the upbuilding of an im- | pregnable civil service system can real progress be secured.” Auto Parade Organized.
