USE OF PISTOLS INDUELSDEPLORED Duelling Masters Resent Preference, but Many Combat With Swords. By the Associated Press, PARIS, July 1.—Dwueling masters deplore the apparent preference for pistols instead of the time-honored sword in present-day duels. Pistols were the weapons used in the duel between Jean Chiappe, former prefect of the Paris police, and Pierre Godin, his predecessor, as president of the Paris Municipal Council. They were also used in settling an affair of honor recently between Horace de Carbuccia and Cesar Campinchi. In each instance one of the duel- ! ists was wounded. | Swords Still Clash. However, swords still clash as Frenchman seeks redress from Frenchman under the ancient “code.” Fights with swords occur probably once a week in France. The laws of the duel, drafted by Bruneau de Laborie, cite the National Fencing Federation rules. The swords are new, standard fed- eration “epees,” with triangular, hol- low-sided 35-inch blades, mounted | with & 5'-inch bell guard and a | 9-inch pummel. The weight may be between 16!, and 27 ounces. The needle-sharp points are sterilized with fire to prevent infection. No | freak handles are permitted. | The usual costume is dark trousers, | street shoes and soft shirt. There | may be neither stiff collar mnor tie. | Protective bandages or hard objects | in pockets are forbidden. Wrist- | length street gloves are commonly | used, but gauntlets of specified length ! sre sometimes worn. Duels Fought in Morning. Duels are fought in the morning, | when the men are rested and secrecy is most easy. The customary “feld | of honor” is 35 meters (38 yards) | long and 4 meters wide. MIAMI. Fla., July 1 (®).—Howar Hilder. 68. noted scenic and mural painter, was found dead yesterday in his Coconut Grove home. Death apparently was from recurrence of a heart attack suffered last Sunday. Constable George Hardy, who in- vestigated, said the artist had been dead since Wednesday. Hilder had been living alone for several months. Recruiting Begins Today. BALTIMORE, July 1 (#)—Enlist- ment of 2,275 men in the Regular Army for duty in the 3rd Corps Area begins today. The recruiting is in line with the increase of the Regular Army by 45,000 men.
