Washingto n Wayside Random Observations of Interesting Events and Things. NEW “NUMBERS" GAME. HE “numbers” game has hit Arlington County, and resi- | dents are getting headaches playing it. This time it is not the gambling racket, but a concerted scramble to change house numbers in accordance | with the street renaming program adopted by county officials. The run on stores which sell house numerals has been so great that supplies of many stores have been exhausted or depleted. Even Washington stores have felt the rush of business and, caught off guard, have sold out their stocks of certain popular numbers, especially ones and sevens. | Some residents in desperation are going from house to house to collect discarded numerals that are needed to form the right combination. Meanwhile, during the transition period confusion reigns for postmen and delivery men, baffled by mixtures of old and new numbers and by no numbers at all. HIDDEN COLLECTION. The only complete collection of State flags extant belongs to the Post Office Department. They formerly hung in the glass-ceilinged court of the old building, but have been tucked away since the depart- ment moved into its new quarters. A suitable means of displaying the banners has not yet been decided upon. ¥k ENTREPRENEUR. A Tenth strect shop has a store- wide sign across the front. BACK from a swing around the circle, one of the Washington corre- spondents tells of a narrow escape an Eastern orator had while addressing a gathering, “out where the West be- gins.” 4 After complimenting the Westerns on their great and growing country, the orator said: “I love the West. I like her self-made men. I admire the great open spaces.
