The fifth Federal reserve district led all 12 districts in the United States| in reducing the number of bank- rupteies in May. Chairman William Hoxton reported in his monthly resume | ©of business and credit conditions “The commercial failure record for! May in the fifth district.” he said. | “was the best record made by anv of the 12 reserve districts, bankruptcies 1n the district last month (May) num- | bering only 27. in comparison with 64 in May. 1934, and last month's aggre- gate liabilities of $507.813 comparing with $1.706,753 in May last year.” Business in the month of May and | the first half in June in the five States of the District “averaged about up to geasonal trends,” with tobacco manu- facturing continuing at “a very high level” with some small increase in textile and coal production and with a | “rather disappointinz” record of re- tail sales. Fiftyv-eight wholesale firms reported an increase over May. 1934, in busi- | ness done in groceries, hardware and drugs, with substantial decreases in dry goods and shoes. Banks Need Higher Interest. Prosperity will elude the banking eommunity until money rates stiffen considerably. according to the A. B. A. magazine, out today. The banks are in an unusually favorable position to financeé industrial growth, the mag- azine says. adding that the extent of | the Fall recovery will depend largely | on the automobile industry. which. in turn, hinges on the crop situation as | reflected in farm purchasing power. The review continues: “One of the most interesting devel- opments in the field of finance in re- | cent weeks has been the continued strength in the stock market, which in June moved into new high ground for the present year. This is partly a reflection of the better earnings of business in 1934 and the first quarter of 1935, partly in anticipation of pos- sible inflation. “Nothing has happened reeently to &trengthen the expectation of infla- | tion. The only positive development teuching on the question has been the rejection of the idea—at least of re- sort to the printing press—in the Pres- ident’s forceful message vetoing the Patman bonus bill. The truth is, how- ever, that there has been a great deal | of inflation talk, and that the specu- lative community seems to be taking it more or less seriously.” Demand for Bends Continues. The demand for City & Suburban 5s on the Washington Stock Exchange continued as the week's business opened today, five consecutive $1.000 sales being registered at 88. Wash- ington Railway & Electric 4s were taken at 10514, 105 and 1043,. A sale of 81,000 Washington Gas 6s, series B, tock place at 104.
