By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 15—The wall of silence with which the titans of the forelgn copper industry have sur- rounded their New York conferences is cracking. Plecing together bits of information which hace leaked from the closely guarded talks, observers are taking a more optimistic attitude over the out- | come than they assumed during simi- lar conferences in the past. The representatives of .the leading foreign copper producers are seeking ta limit the production of copper in the South American, African, Cana- dian and European arears. All agree these would result in a better world price for the metal. Production of the great American mines is already curtailed under the industry’'s “Blue Eagle” agreement. As a prerequisite to reduce produc- s A_19 Canadian Tax Cuts Baltimore’s Trade, U. S. Action Urged Spe!n Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, March 15.—Unless means can be worked out to eliminate Canada’s present tax on imports routed through Baltimore and other American ports, the Baltimore Asso- ciation of Commerce will urge retal- iatory legislation by the United States. G. H. Pouder, executive vice presi- dent of the association and head of its Export and Import Bureau, revealed his group has written to United States Tariff Commission’s Committee for | Reciprocity, announced such a stand a.d urging everything possible be done to bring about a satisfactory | agreement between the governments of the two countries. Mr. Pouder pointed out that the tax has cost the port of Baltimore considerable traffic, WAGES TO BE RESTORED BY WESTERN MARYLAND By the Associated Press. BALTIMORE, March 15.—Employes of the Western Maryland Railroad have a wage restoration coming to them Saturday. The road’s announcement yesterday | said the Western Maryland was not a party to the agreement of a group of railroads in 1932 that deductions bz tion .outside this country, the Eu- ropean and African interests insist on marketing agreements which will pro- | vide for an equitable division of world markets for the smaller output, in- cluding a limitation on the amount of the metal which may be exported from | this country. Low prices for copper have already | greatly reduced American shipments abroad. It is learned on good authority that substantial and satisfactory progress | has been made in devising concrete methods for curtailing output on a | quota basis. A progressive curtailment | plan to extend over a considerable period of time is said to be very near acceptance. The problem of Canadian copper output is still partly unsolved, how- ever, it is said. The Canadian mines for the most part recover the metal as a by-product of precious metals, and | the amount of their outturn is there- fore more or less involuntary. % $11,140,000 Earned By General Foods!
