THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTO) D. C, THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 1935. FRST IFE DEFES REVNOLDSFAMILY Claims They Have No Right to Dispose of Trust Estate. By the Associated Press. WINSTON-SALEM, N. C.. March 14.—The ight of the Reynolds family | to dispose of Smith Reynolds’ trust estate was under fire today in the hearing on a proposal for settlement of the $30,000,000 fortune left by the young tobacco heir. Aubrey L. Brooks of Greensboro, | N. C, opposed the arrangement as at- | torney for Mrs. Annie Laurie Cannon, | grandmother and coguardian of Anne | |0ld Taney Clock Called Justices 2 Minutes Early Century-old Timepiece Still Used by Court Clerk. BY DON BLOCH. Lodged in a city where good time is almost a fetish—in a city, in fact, where the best time in the United States may be had—is one spot where Cannon Reynolds, 2d, daughter of young Reynolds' first wife. | He contended the brother and sis- ters who offered the settlement kad | only a contingent interest in the es- tate. | Family Wants Division. | After speaking for two and a half the wrong time is the right time, and the best time is slow. With which beginning, we invite you to hear the story of a clock 100 years old that bongs out the time in the Capitol. | Back in 1836, Chief Justice Roger :“’::’; {;““"y- 3300“5 had the floor | g “Taney of the Supreme Court, be- 8! ay as Judge Clayton Moore | came weary of his colleagues always continued his hearing on the offer of | donning their raven robes in the R. The law states that the 4 years old; Christopher Smith Rey- nolds, 2-year-old son of Libby Holman, | the actress, and themselves, their | share to be used for a benevolent | foundatior. | Brooks contended the family had | no present claim. Under R. J.! Reynolds' will, Smith would not have come into control until November 4, | 1939, his 28th birthday anniversary. | Before that date, thc attorney as- serted, the brother and sisters would have a direct claim only it both little Anne and Christopher should die. Divorce Legality in Doubt. ‘The attorrey for Mrs. Cannon in- dicated her position was that the pre- | divorce agreement should be annuled | and that the fortune be left as at present_until the 28th anniversary of young Reynolds’ birth, when it would descend to his children. H. G. Hudson, attorney Reynolds family, conceded that the legality of the Reno divorce obtained by the first wife, formerly Anne Can- non, might be contested on the basis of improper service. If held illegal, | he admitted, it would invalidate the marriage to Miss Holman and raise | & doubt as to her son’s legal status as an_heir. | for the Taney was a liberal-minded man. Clock Ordered Built. In order to remedy the matter, he | ordered one long-forgotten Simon | Willard of Boston, to build him a clock. Simon was then in his 84th year, but one of the best clockmakers in the young country. In 1837 the clock was delivered to the Capitol. It was a huge affair, a a yard across with a beveled face and delicately done numbers, circled in gold scroll work, with a classic Greek's bearded head surrounded by fancy loops and whorls on the bottom It had to be wound with a great brass But, he emphasized, the family de- | § sires the settlement to be passed on without regard to the personal affairs | of young Reynolds. S Million for Highways. Panama will spend $1.000.000 on its highways this year and next. “It has now paid for itself and the Rollator Mechanisn is be tter than new !” key once s week. It was set exactly, when it came. Chief Justice Taney chose the spot in the Supreme Court where he wanted it hung. This, of course, was in the old Supreme Court chambers, now the Law Library. Then Taney did a curious thing. He deliberately set the clock two minutes ahead, so that it would strike out the hour 120 seconds before noon —the hour set for convening court. Wrong Time Right Time. The justices had to go by that clock. Taney, in a city where being on time was the mode, and where a precision clock in the Bureau of Standards sets the best time in the Nation, deliberately made the wrong time the right time. For 28 years thereafter, until his death, Roger B. Taney had the satisfaction of knowing his group of nine men met on the hour. In 1860 the court moved upstairs to its present location. The clock moved, too, but not into the court. It was too large, perhaps. Fate brought ordinary clocks into the Su- preme Court room. Today there are two common ones of the electric va- riety. But they don’t have a history, they don't ring out the hour, and the two-minutes-early rule has been for- gotten. But tne clock of Roger B. Taney still tells the time. It came into the | Supreme Court convenes at noon, and | WEAR MIR-O-KLEER* HOSIERY..].00 EliT.ALE-TOP* MIR-O-KLEER... -5 up & 7 ) offices of the deputy clerk of the Supreme Court. There it is today, still wound every Monday morning with the big, brass key, still booming out high noon at 11:58.
