HOUSEWIVES WARNED ON STOVE.DEVICES Better Business Bureau Head Cites Report “Gas-Savers” Are Often Dangerous. Housewives were warned yesterday by Louis Rothschild, director of the Better Business Bureau of Washington, against purchasing so-called “gas- | who have been offering solid tops and | other devices for gas rangers. | Rothschild asserted that informa- tion sent to his office indirectly from the National Bureau of Standards showed that a number of such de- vices are actually wasters of gas, rather than savers, and that some of them are dangerous to health and can possibly become fatally hazardous. Of the 42 varieties of so-called “gas savers” known to the American Gas Association, Rothschild said, those most frequently offered for sale-are designed to fit over or around indi- vidual burners. . “These devices,” he said, “may pro- duce carbon mgnoxide in dangerous amounts, cauyse higher instead of i savers” from dcor-to-door salesmen lower gas bills and, when of the burner THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. MRS. NORTON BACKS BUS TERMINAL MOVE House D. C. Committee Head Sup- ports Utilities Unit Move to Clear Streets. Chairman Norton of the House Dis- trict Committee comnrended the Pub- lic Utilities Commission yesterday for its move to force all types of pas- senger motor busses from curbstone to off-street terminals. She declared removal of the big busses from the streets would improve traffic conditions, make the streets safer and create additional parking space for private vehicles. “In view of the alarming increase in traffic accidents and fatalities in Wi ,” Mrs. Norton said, “I think everything possible should be done to make the streets safer for both vehicles and pedestrians. A pro- hibition against the curbstone bus terminals would be a step in that direction.” The Utilities Commission already has held hearings on a proposal to re- quire the busses to find off-street ter- minal facilitfes, Class A busses, or those engaged in interstate traffic, are now required to lay over in off- street terminals. The proposed ban would affect the Class B and Class C busses, operating in the District and into the so-called metropolitan area of Maryland and Virginia, Town Makes Big Proft.
