PRISON QUIBARES SEIET BURKS Graves of Alleged Victims of Discipline Will Be Visited by Probers. By the Associated Press. CHARLOTTE, N. C, March 14—A legislative investigating committee last night had before it evidence that North Carolina prison camp officials had made a practice of secret burials for friendless victims of their disciplinary practices. Meanwhile, authorities moved to re- vise the prison descipline system. Withholding the identity of their informant, a former convict who is still under suspended sentence, mem- bers of the commttee last night were unanimous in their determination to visit the scenes of lonely graves de- scribed by him. The committee was told that when beatings, chained suspensions and other forms of punishment proved fatal, bodies of the victims were carted to a lonely mountain spot and buried and circumstances of the cases glossed over in official reports. Offers to Point Out Graves. ‘The informant was quoted as claim- Ing to have been himself a member of such burial parties, and he offered to lead the committee in its quest. ‘The committee received the startling testimony near what it had expected would be the end of an investigation into practices in Mecklenburg County which were alleged to have resulted | in the death of two prisoners and the loss of both feet by two others. Testimony regarding hitherto un- mentioned brutalities at the Henry Little Convict Camp near here was produced earlier in the day as the committee began its study of prison discipline conditions. Official Reports Discredited. Started mainly as an investigation of why it was necessary to amputate the feet of two colored convicts after | they had been chained in solitary | confinement at the camp, the legis- lators already had heard evidence dis- crediting official reports on the death of a colored inmate and attributing it to his having been suspended in chains for a long period | A second death was brought into | the record of the investigation by | testimony of Manley Swaringen, for- | mer convict at the camp, who said a colored man named Carter, who has not yet been fully identified, died at the county home in 1927, after re- over a period of three months. I say that the men or man who framed that bill in its original form should be deported from the United States of America to Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany or Communistic Russia.” Groom Drops Dead at Altar.
