Devine, Washington, from Ludwig H. Domine, Ham- burg. BY JAMES WALDO FAWCETT. In the death of Beverly S. King, American vhilatelv has lost a human asset of superlative value and signifi- cance, and the shock of his untimely | and tragic passing will be felt among collectors of all classes. Mr. King was Loth an artist and a scientist. His love of beauty found expression in his work as an architect, and his devotion to truth was mani- fested in his scholarly study of stamps and in his honorable and trustworthy practice of philatelic journalism With Max G. Johl as his collabora- tor, he sponsored the acknowledged classic of contemporary stamp ':iera- ure—the three volumes of “The United States Postage Stamps of the Twen- tieth Century,” of which the first two —Star Staff Photo, of the American Philatelist, revenue | editor of Scott’s Menthly Journal and United Staies editor of Stamps Maga- zine, His own personal collection included philatelic s10velties unique in charac- ter—original drawings for stamp de- signs, for »xample. But his speriali- zation in United States postal issues did not blind him t¢ the advantages of general collecting. On the contrary, he had the connoisseur’s appreciation for any ‘nteresting stamp withou* re- gard to its origin or classification. But Mr. King was not satisfied to Far collect, study or write alone. from being a “hermit,” he developed a positive genius for fellowship and toward that ideal end devoted = gen- which friends and strangers alike en- tertain in varting with him. Following a brief memorial address by Michael L. Eidsness, jr., the Wash- ington Philatelic Society adopted the following resolution Wednesday eve- ning: “Whereas, in the recent death of Beverly S. King, the Washington Philatelic Society has lost one of its most. valued members, a man whose expert knowledge and writings on the subject of philately have been a source of pleasure and information to many, and a man whose loss will be felt keenly by philatelists throughout the | country, therefore, be it resolved that he Washington Philatelic Society | does hereby publicly acknowledge the debt owed by philately to Mr. King for | his services and contributions in this | field and does take this opportunity to express its sorrow upon the occasion | of his death and to convey a message lof sympathy to his family in their | hour of bereavement, and be it further resolved that this resolution be in- corporated in the minutes of this society and that copies of this resolu- |tion be sent to the family of Mr. | King and to the press.” | The “collectors’ edition” of Mr. Far- | ley's gift stamps will go on sale at the | Philatelic Agency and the Benjamin | Pranklin station Friday morning at 8. A stamp in tribute to Commodore John Barry of Revolutionary War fame also has been requested. Other appeals are for stamps commemorat- ing the discovery of Puerto Rico by Christopher Columbus, the career of the late Senator Tom Watson of Georgia, and the centenary of the admission of the State of Michigan to the Union. Mr. Eidsness, in Stamps Magazine for March 9, writes: “Can scenic views or public building views be represented appropriately on small-size stamps? 1 think the answer should be: Yes. The 25-cent Niagara Falls, 50-cent Arlington Ampitheater, $1 Lincoln Memorial and $2 Capitol issues dem- onstrates that it can be done. ... “The small stamps, collectors should remember, are suitable for the use of firms known as ‘heavy mailers'—firms conducting large advertising cam- paigns, firms doing a large parcel post business. Hence, they reach thou- sands of ordinary collectors who other- wise never would see stamps of t_he special commemorative or promotion kind—the ‘Wisconsin and Parks issues, for instance. And there is an advan- tage in general distribution which will be apparent to anyone who thinks of the matter for a moment.” Concerning . the recently released green, bridge and presidential pale ace; 40-cent, red brown, airplane view of Tegucigalpa; 50-cent, yellow, symbolic owl, and 1-lempira, coat of arms. Some one came running up toward him, almost crashed him. The soldier jumped back against the wall. “Pardon, senor!” he gasped. Montana went silently past. He was down the second flight of stairs. He was at the entrance to the guard room. There had been three men in the place when he and Rubriz made their entrance, terrible hours before. There were almost a dozen present now, and there was a cap- | tain among them! From the deeps of his throat the Kid summoned a guttural roar: “At- tention!” and strode in on the wings of that word. They came to rigid attention, all of them, their eves foolishly staring, their arms foolishly stiff at their sides. So the Kid crossed to the door. “Open!” he thundered. “But, excellency—" said the cap- tain. There was a corporal who heard | the word “excellency” and sprang like a frightened rabbit to do the first He worked feverishly, wrenching back the three bolts. He thrust them so fast and hard that | they clanged loudly. The heavy door yawned a little. “Excellency said the captain. “Silenc roared El Keed. “Silence be damned!" exclaimed the captain. “What are you and who are you?” He came striding, with a jingle of spurs, and the Kid leaped through the widening lip of the door. ‘The night struck at him like a wet black hand. He heard, from behind him, a scream of rage and astonish- ment, like the shriek of a woman. Hard to the left he turned, shed- ! ding the encumbering cloak as he ran. Behind him, the arm of light was widening, reaching into the rain of the night. And the guard was pouring out, each man shooting at the brilliant phantom nothingness of the light and the rain. Then they had sight of Montana | to their left, already dim with night | |and distance, and running straight down the slope toward those willows which stood by the bank of the river. | They paused even now to fire a few shots, in hope of good fortune and also to catch the ear of the rest of the fort. Then they burst into pur- suit of a fugitive who was already | invisible. One cry came out of the throat of the Kid as he neared the willows. And when he came through them he _ | found the gigantic form of the friar. The Kid leaped on the red mare. “Take the black and the mule,” CRE TRACT ON KENT ISLAND. | he commanded. “I have half of the crown. The soldiers are after me. We must ford the river. Rubriz will never come this way tonight!” They pushed straight out from the The rain, sent out of a kind heaven, the same wind and rain that had tortured Montana |on the ledge beneath the window, now stormed down in an - trable veil. He could hear g“ul::::xno!ts from behind, but he could see noth- ing. The water rose to his knees, :;1 shoall:d. He came out on the far- er shore, with Brother beside him. T As Montana had guessed, it was not on the strength of his hands that Rubriz was depending when he determined to leave the governor's room by the open way. ‘When he came to the fallen door he picked it up and placed the bur- den of it over his shoulder and the back of his neck. He had barely put the thing in position when many men stormed in from the hall with panting Gen. Ignacio Estrada at their head. He caught Rubriz by the shoulder. His grip slipped on the great rub- bery muscles that shod the bones of Rubriz. “What's this? What's happen! here?” cried Estrada. Theh.ne “I carry away the door to be re- paired,” said Rubriz. “I know noth- ing but orders. I am a poor servant, senor.” “All half-wits. All fools. Nothing but blind men around me tonight,” shouted Estrada. He strode on into his room. The others followed, and with the bugles blowing the call to arms, Rubriz went on down the stairs. ‘The' governor, entering his bed which he was held and the sorrow into "q'i v E BY EVAN EVANS - room. looked wildly around him. What burn, you fool?” bellowed the general. Then he saw it and followed the irregular course of the little black spots to the point where they disap- peared under the door of the closet. At that, & suspicion too terrible to pass up into words overwhelmed him. He passed & hand across his shaggy hair, It seemed to him that a ghost, not Ignacio Estrada, had been rejoicing himself not long before with the pretty face of a girl. Compared with such a loss as might befall him, what were all the women of the world? He tore open the closet door. In- side the thick, strange smell which had been noticeable in the bed room was much more pronounced. And the door of the safe hung open on one hinge—the drawers had been jerked out, half the contents scat- tered, half taken! He had a good hold on the edge of the door or he would have stag- gered. He might even have fallen to his knees under the weight of this calamity. Instead, he merely rolled back his head and started upward. “Father in heaven, what have I done to you?” muttered Estrada. He turned slowly on the others. “Get out into every corner of the building!” he exclaimed. “Burrow into the cracks of the stones. Be- cause El Keed is here among us. My God! how can a man walk invisible? I am robbed. Do you hear? And El Keed—" A loud and sustained rattling of guns began at this moment. The general ran to the open window and | leaned out. “It's from the postern! | thief has escaped by the came I'll skin the guards them with my own teeth!" “No, excellency. He could not have | gone that way. men and Captain “Damn the men—damn the cap- tains! Names are no good. Numbers are nothing. Brains are what rule the world. Scatter! Use your feet if you can't use your wits! | The door was heavy, but Rubriz could have carried it like a feather |if he had not known that it was | better to assume the swinging, slow | pace of the true laborer. So he went | patiently down the stairs and through | the lower gallery, and finally into the | great open court vard, where he was | shocked by a noise of firing just out- | side the fort and a clamoring of voices made high and thin by ex- citement. He dropped the door to the ground, but, noticing that some soldiers were watching him, he hastily put it on his back once more and went on. Had they captured Montana? Well, at least the curse of the alarm bell, was still in his ear, beat- | ing on his brain with the impulse to | flee as fast as he could. He kept to his steady gait right across the in- side parade ground. He was right at the gate before he was halted. “Who goes there?” - “Luis Lapaz.” “What's that' “The door of the room of Gen. Estrada.” “What are you doing with the ddor of the commander?” asked the lieu- tenant. He began to laugh as he asked the question. “I am carrying it,* said Rubriz, simply. “I can see you are, donkey. Buf why are you carrying it?” “I am taking it away,” said Rubriz. “Be patient.” said another young officer. “You can see that the man is not right, up here.” “Well, these fools! Luis Lapaz?” “Yes, senor.” “Where is your pass?” “I lost it, my senor.” “Come, come! = Simpleton or no simpleton, that won’t do here! Where did you lose it?” If the way he and eat ‘Tomorrow, brings added daager to Rubris. £ s!" he shouted “If you 5 “Although i_t has special stamps of its own design for denominations ranging up to one shilling, the Irish Free State still uses the overprinted adhesives of Great Britaim for its Ligher values,” says Max L.
