FI STOCKS SELL OFF AS POUND DROPS _Wall Street Again Nervous Over Foreign Exchanges. Rails Depressed. WHAT STOCKS DID. lltu!dl' Pflflly dvances lines nchanged ... Total issues .... By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 9.—Prices ‘B in the two-hour session today J.and Wall Street nerves appeared & " Httle jumpy. . The monetary question came to the fore again as sterling turned weak, losing around 3 cents in relation to ‘the dollar in late dealings. European nervousness over the increasingly seri- ous Balkan troubles, coupled with the recent run-up in the British currency, were believed in exchange circles to have made it a target for liquidation iand short selling. . Stock prices were mostly reaction- &ry. Government obligations were steady to a shade improved. The mining issues were able to better the performance of the general list to gain fractions to around a point or so, while the high-priced Homestake lifted a full 5 points. The recent advance in the price of gold - in the London open market encour- aged those following the group. Oopper Shares Easy. Copper shares were fractionally easy despite the presence here of a delega- tion of Furopean producers’ repre- sentatives who will confer next week on a plan to curtail production of the red metal outside the United States. Although there was a general hesi- | tancy to make new commitments on the part of most traders, there did not appear to be any disposition to ‘press offerings on the market. This has created a further unfavorable trade balance. Dr. Schacht economic dictator in the Reich, now proposes to bring new aid to expoit- ers in the form of a subsidy. Export prices will be forced down to the point where German goods can compete with similar items from other coun- tries. To make this loss to exporters | all German industry will be forced to contribute to a co-operative fund which will be distributed to those in- dustries which suffer a loss on their | export sales. The sales must con- tinue and expand if Germany is to create the foreign exchange with wmch to buy essennnl Taw mnterilu | tures, responsive as always to move- ments of the pound sterling, lost 0.13 | to 0.18 of a cent a pound. Rails Under Pressure. Carrier shares bore the brunt of the day's offerings. While there were no | immediate new developments, those who follow the fortunes of the rails } most closely continued to point to the | poor earnings showing being made by latest monthly figures, and the fact | that the volume of freight movement is currently below a year ago. With |a 5 per cent wage increase scheduled | for April 1, increasing misgivings as to profit prospects for the group as a | whole were being expressed in many Wall Street quarters. | Among trading leaders which ended the day lower by minor fractions to | & half point or so were U.
