R e R e THOMPSON WEIGHS MAVORALTYRACE Chicago Republicans Angle for Comeback Try by “Big Bill.” + $v the Associated Press. ! CHICAGO, Januar: 4—Politicians were wondering today if William Hale Thompson will attempt a political ¢omeback. But “Big Bill” remained | gilent on his intentions, and the 1935 ayoralty race started out mildly. < So far, only two candidates for the fomination have filed petitions with the county clerk. They are the in- cumbent, Mayor Edward J. Kelly, Democrat, and Emil C. Wetten, Re- publican. * Mayor Kelly’s decision to run was fantamount to nomination. The in- cumbent has the full support of his party’s organization. A majority of Republican leaders, however, profess or believe that former Mayor Thompson would be the strong- est candidate of his party against Mayor Kelly. It is generally conceded that Thompson could win the Re- publican nomination easily, and Wet- ten may step aside. To date the Republican City Com- mittee has been reluctant to announce any decision, hoping that the former mayor may be induced to make the face. On the other hand, Thompson epparently is not overenthusiastic about getting back into politics. A third group, to be known as “the | Third Party,” organized by Newton | Jenkins, one-time candidate for the Republican nomination for Senator, has announced that a mayoralty can- didate will be placed in the field. BARRIE, Ontario, January 4.—Prep- ! arations were made by airpiane and | lifeboat today to rescue seven men marooned on giant ice floes in Lake Simcoe during a gale in 20 below zero weather. At Oro Station, 14 miles northeast of here, six Toronto lifeguards awaited improved visibility before setting out in a rowboat to take off three fisher- men from a floe more than a mile from shore, One of the trio is 76 years old. An air force plane from Camp Bor- den was to attempt the rescue of four others whose only footing since late yesterday has been an ice floe a mile and a half from shore. An attempt will be made to land the plane on the mile-long cake. Ani early morning attempt to rescue Jones | and his two companions, Hugh Ross, 58, and Lloyd Barnes, 18, failed in the darkness.
