CITY HEADS AWAIT SANATORIUM FUND Ask $1,500,000 ‘Advance by P. W. A. on Adult Building at Glenn Dale. Preparations for starting of con- struction on additions to the Chil- dren’s Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Glenn Dale, Md., were being made to- day by the District Commissioners while they awaited an answer from the Public Works Administration for the immediate advance of §1,500,000 for erection of an adult tuberculosis hos- pital on the same site. The Commissioners filed with Sec- retary of Interior Ickes yesterday a request for an advance of the full sum of $1,500,000 for the adult building under terms of the P. W. A. loan agreement signed recently by both District and Federal officials. Plans for this structure now are being drawn. Another step toward enlargement of the District’s tuberculosis center on the large tract in Prince Georges County was taken when bids were opened for construction of wings to the Children’s Sanatorium, the main wing of which was opened last Sep- tember. February 1 Start Planned. Construction of these wings will be started by February 1, if present plans carry. The low bid was submitted by the North-Eastern Construction Co. of Baltimore, which offered to do the | work for $377,300. The second low bidder was the George Hyman Con- struction Co. of this city. This work will be financed out of an | appropriation of $500,000 contained in the 1935 District supply act, 8100.0001 of which was for drafting of plans for | the adult building. The additions will consist of six units in all, but the predominant work will be building of two large wings dropped from the original plans be- cause of lack of sufficient initial ap- | propriation. These will provide beds | for 154 additional juvenile patients, | more than doubling present capacity. In addition there will be 7 beds for internes, 48 for domestic help and 19 additional beds for nurses. One of the new units will be an addition to the nurses’ home. Roofs to Be Solariums. ‘The project will make more com- plete the present facilities of the hos- pital, aside from the addition of 228 more beds in all. The roofs of the two main wings will be developed in part as solariums where patients may benefit from sun baths. A space 33 feet by 80 feet will be allowed for this purpose on each wing. Also there wiil | be s large porch off each floor of | the two wings for similar purposes. There will be developed, also. an indoor recreation hall and auditorium, to fill a need that exists at the pres- ent incomplete plant. Engineer Department lofficials hope to have the contract documents ready for action by the Comumissioners at their board meeting next Tuesday. The adult hospital is to be com- pleted by September 1, 1936, under | the agreement reached by the Com- | missioners and the P. W. A. Actual construction of this building will be | started next August under present plans. Some preliminary work will be started much sooner, while archi- « tects are completing working draw- ings and specifications. NEWFOUNDLERS SHARE NEW ZEALAND ESTATE 85 on Herring Neck Are Heirs of Almost Forgotten ManWho Left Years Ago. By the Associated Press. HERRING NECK, Newfoundland, January 4—Santa Claus came late to this little fishing community, but when he came his pack was full of good news for almost every Herring Neck | inhabitant. The spirit of Christmas was, for the occasion, impersonated by a mail courder, who battled through dcepen- ing snow drifts to make his deliveries. He brought in his packs checks for 35 Herring Neckers signifying that they were sharers in the estate of their re- mote and almost forgotten relative, John Esau Miles, who died in New Zealand last Summer. The estate was appraised at $450,000. John Esau Miles, so the historically- minded folks here say, was one of the Newfoundlers who emigrated to- the Antipodes when economic conditions ‘were unsettled on the American con- tinent after the Civil War in the United States, " —_— Marriage Offer Goes Begging.
