ROOSEVELT was - the M honor guest at luncheon to- day of Mrs. John Nance Garner, wife of the Vice President, who entertained at | the Washington Hotel, where the Vice President and Mrs. Garner make their home. Jewels and Court Dress ‘Add Color to Reception. Mrs. Cordell, wife of the Secretary of State, wore an unusually lovely gown of gold and rose lame, the neck- line cut in a V at the front with a large bow of the material marking the neck at the back. The attractive | ‘wife of the Secretary of State seldom | wears ornaments except pearls, and | for last night's party she had on a single string of pearls. Mrs. Henry Morgethau, jr.. wife of the Secretary of the Treasury, was in a becoming gown of black velvet trimmed with rhinestones. The Secretary of War and Mrs. George H. Dern were accompanied by their daughters, Mrs. Harry Baxter and Miss Betsy Dern. Mrs. Dern was in a gown of black sheer crepe, the bodice of pink chiffon and gold lace falling over the shoulders. She ware antique pearl and onyx earrings and a brooch to match. Mrs. Baxter was in a black velvet robe de style gown designed with an off-the-shoulder bodice with a band of heavy gold| lace forming a bertha effect. Miss Dern was in a jade green moire frock made with a full skirt and the square neckline and short sleeves edged with & ruffle of the material. Mrs. Claude A. Swanson, wife of the Secretary of the Navy, was in a be- coming gown of silver brocade made with a train and she wore pearl ornaments. The Attorney General and Mrs, Homer S. Cummings were accom- panied by their house guests, Mrs. Bartow S. Weeks and Miss Anne Cal- laghan of New York. Mrs. Cummings wore a beautiful gown of olive green velvet, the neckline at the back fin- ished with the new cowl effect, the, collar lined with gold lace striped with American beauty and green. The | skirt fell in a short train, which was | lined with lame like that on the col- lar, and she wore a pearl tiarra. Mrs. ‘Weeks was a striking figure in & gown of black satin fashioned with a train and the bodice showing touches of white lame. Miss Callaghan was in | rich blue moire made on fitted lines, the skirt falling into a short train. | Mrs. Harold L. Ickes, wife of the Secretary of the Interior, wore a be- | coming gown of white and silver | lame, designed on long lines with & | train. Mrs. Henry A. Wallace, wife of the Secretary of Agriculture, wore a gown of moss-green velvet, made with a short train and a square neckline. The Secretary of Commerce and Mrs. Daniel C. Roper had with them their daughter, Miss Grace Roper, who was in a gown of emerald green velvet, Mrs. Roper wore a becoming gown of white crepe incrusted with | white beads and made with a train | of sapphire blue velvet. The Secretary of Labor, Miss Frances Perkins, wore a gown of dull silver lame, made with a train. The only absentees in the cabinet circle were Secretary Swanson and Mrs. James A. Farley, wife of the Postmaster General, who is at her home, in New York. Diplomats in Full Regalia. The Ambassador of France and Mme. de Laboulaye were accompanied by their two sons, M. Paul de Labou- laye and M. Franeois de Laboulaye, and their daughter, Mile. Marie Theresa de Laboulaye. Mme. de Laboulaye wore a becoming gown of black velvet, gracefully and simply made, the skirt falling into a shert and graceful train. Her ornaments ‘were diamonds. Mile. de Laboulaye had a dainty dress of pink mousseline de soie and a silver belt marked the wedstline. Mme. Saito, who accompanied her husband, the Ambassador of Japan, ‘was in a becoming gown of white and silver brocade, made on fitted lines, the skirt falling into & graceful short train. She wore a diamond ‘pendant and pearl earrings. His daughters, Senorita Marts Trucco, Senorita Graciela Trucco and members of the embassy staff, in. cluding the counselor, Senor Don Benjamin Cohen, Senor Don Mario Rodriquez, Second Secretary Senor Don Fernando Illanes Benitez, an- sectetary, and the new attache, Senor Marino Valdes. The Senoritas Trucco all wore white gowns and they all wore brilliant ornaments and long white kid gloves. In -the absence of the Ambassador of Mexico, Senor Dr. Don Fernando Gonzalez Roa, who is spending a short vacation in his native country, Senor Dr. Don Pablo Campos-Ortiz, who is acting charge d'affaires, at- tended the function accompanied by Senora de Campos-Ortiz, who was'in studded in brilliants and made with a high neckline and long train. With this she wore diamond ornaments. The dean of the Ministers, the Minister of Switzerland, who was ac- companied by Mme. Peter, who wore a striking gown, a Parisian model, designed of black silver with a bodice of white and silver lame. The bodice was made on fitted lines and the skirt fell into a graceful train. With this Mme. Peter wore diamonds and pearls. ‘The retiring Minister of Greece and Mme. Simopoulos held a veritable re- ception of their own last evening, be- ing among the most popular diplomats accredited to the Capital. They will leave within a few days to sail for England, where the Minister will take up his new duties at the Court of St. James. Mme. Simopoulos, always one of the strikingly dressed matrons of the corps, wore oyster gray satin fashioned on severely plain lines with | a long train and a square neckline| and her ornaments were of pearls. The Minister of Sweden, Mr. W. Bostrom, was accompanied by mem- bers of the legation staff. Because of illness Mme. Bostrom was unable to attend. Senore de Lopez-Herrarte wore a gown of green crepe made in tunic effect with an orchid of velvet at the left shoulder. She wore a diamond necklace. Mrs. Michael MacWhite, wife of the Minister of the Irish Free State, was in s becoming gown of white satin embroidered in siiver in a bouquet | pattern, designed on princess lines, with & small train, and she wore a necklace of diamonds and emeralds. The Minister of Panama and Mme. Alfaro were among the early arrivals. Mme, Alfaro was in a gown of rust brown lace, made on straight simple lines, with draperies over the shoul- der, and she wore gold earrings and necklace. A lovely picture of the Orient was Mme, Sze, wife of the of China, who wears on most occasions one of her native costumes, and for last night’s party she selected a lovely thade of blue, brocaded in silver, and on her lustrous black hair she wore a diamond tlarra. The diplomatic corps boasts three debutantes, and these lovely young women were at the party last night with their parents. The Minister of Austria and Mme. Prochnik had with them Mile. Valerie Prochnik, the Min- ister of the Netherlands and Mme. Van Haersma de With were accom- panied by Mlle. Nora van Haersma de With, and Mille, Gladys Broz, popular debutante daughter, , was with her| father and mother, the first secretary of the Czechoslovakian legation and | Mme. Broz. Mme. Prochnik, always one of the most smartly dressed women of the diplomatic set, had & gown of black and gold lame, made with a train and ong scarf, which arranged becom- ly about her throat. Mile. Over the shoulders were blue velvet ornaments, which fell into a long sash. The Minister of Yugoslavia Dr. Leonide Pitamic and the legation staff were among the absentees. Yugo- slavia is observing gourt mourning. The Minister of Venezuela and Sen- ora de Arcaya were accompanied by Senorita Hercilia Urrutia. Senora de Aracaya wore plack satin trimmed with green velvet and emerald orna- ments. Senorita Urrutia was in black velvet and siwver, and she wore dia- mond ornaments. The Minister of Denmark M. Otto Wadsted, was accompanied by Mme. Wadsted, the latter in a simply made frock of white taffeta. Mme. Oster- berg, wife of the commercial attache of the legation, the only other hostess in the legation staff, wore silver lame with a generous sash of fuschia color velvet. ‘The Minister of Canada and Mrs. Herridge arrived late yesterday after- non from their Canadian home, where they spent Christmas and the holiday. Mrs. Herridge was a striking figure in a gown of gold lame.
