COOLEY, ' Associated Press Financial Writer. ~ NEW YORK, May 20—The Curb turned somewhat heavy todey, though | volume was of moderate proportions. Week end profit-taking in an assort ment of specialities which had been advancing rapidly tended to spread to other divisions of the list, although | some oil shares resisted pressure. YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, May 20:— Steel production in the Youngstown district will rise next week to approxi- | mately 43 per cent of capacity, after having gone to 40 per cent at the mid- dle cf this week. Next week will be the ninth consecu~| tive weex to show a gain in mill oper- ations here. Carnegie Steel Co. will operate two | additional open hearth furnaces, put- | ting about 40 of the district’s 83 Iur-| naces on the active list. Some of the| active units, however, are small ones. | With the addition, Carnegie will havei 11 furnaces working next week, the| largest number since October, 1929. | In addition Republic Steel Corpora- | tion will shcw a gain in Bessemer Steel | output. | Ordinarily steel produciion shows a seasonal decrease in May. \ | Commodity Price { Changes of Week cific, Pepperell Manufacturing and Na- | tional Sugar Refining. In utilities Electric Bond & Share, Duke Power and American Gas drifted downward. though Consolidated Gas of Baltimore rallied a major fraction Standard Cap & Seal was one of the exceptions to the general trend, ad- wvancing more than 4 points on an early transaction. Darby Petroleum rose 1';. Oil issues generally were rather quiet after Fri- day's upturn in response to prospective Federal legislation designed to assist the industry. Baltimore Market Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, Md., May 20.—The egg market has taken on an easier tone the past week under liberal receipts cou- pled with only a moderate demand and values show a decline of a cent a dozen from opening prices Monday, Street sales ‘continue light, the bulk of receipts being offered and sold on the exchange | and going largely to packers for stor- age. Shippers are grading more care- fully, howescr, and the market prices are based on current receipts and near- by firsts with the former bringing 12 cents a dozen and the latter 12'. cents. Poultry Prices. The live poultry market holds steady to firm with little change from la: week except on old hens, which show an advance of a cent a pound. De- mand continues good for fat Spring chickens of the mixed colored Rock riety which meet with ready sale, but stock weighing under 10'. pounds not wanted and hard to move out even at | discounts to the street arabs. Plymouth Rocks, 2 pounds and over. are bringing top prices of 19 to 23, with mixed col- ored selling mostly 18 to 22, but Leg- horns not £o desirable and will not bring over 16 and 17. and 1% to 2 pound Springers generally slow sale at 14 to 18. Old hens in better demand and the market is higher at 12 to 15 for fowl weighing 31, pounds and over, but Leg- horns will not bring over 11 and 12 with all poor, light fowl hard to place | at'9 and 10 and old roesters neglected at 6 tc 8. very limited and only stock weighing 4 pounds and over attracts attention with values a shade lower at 9 to 12. Market for guinea fowl and pigeons steady and unchanged at 25 to 45 each for the former and 15 to 20 a pair for both young and old of the latter. | Despite the increase on the market of new potatces. old stock is fairly good demand and holding steady at 80 to 90 per 100 pounds, but only U. 8. No. 1 standards will bring these prices. Sweet potatoes and yams in good request with market holding steady and unchanged at 75 to 110 per bushel for Eastern Shore sweets, but Virginia stock will not bring over 50 and 75 with yams selling mostly 1.75 to 2.00 per barrel. Receipts of nearby vegetables con- tinue to increase and while a fairly good demand prevails market generally easy with values mostly in buyers favor and the fcllowing quotations: Aspara- gus. 50 to 1.50 dozen; beets, 75 to 1.00 crate; cabbage, 50 to 75 hamper; kale. 15 to 25 bushel: lettuce, 50 to 65 bushel; peas, 1.00 hamper; radishes, 50 to 2.00 per 100, and spinach, 1 to 30 bushel. Live Stock Market. Market for live cattle orr the wharves shows a slight improvement, but values are slow to show any material advance. Most of the arrivals on the wharve: however, consist of common in-between kinds which are hard to place as de- mand is centered mostly on first-qual- ity stock. Quotations today at Light Street Whar! McGILL, Editor, McGill Commodity Service, Inc. AUBURNDALE, Mass., May 20 (P).— | The index of all commodity prices | failed to advance during the past week. | This is the first scven-day period that prices have not increased since the first | week in March. The figure is exactly the same as a week ago. There were | more advances than declines, and out of 14 individual groups 7 successfully | registered increases and only 4 declined, leaving 3 groups unchanged. In every | case price changes were of a limited | nature. Industrial prices were fractionally | higher, caused by higher price averages | for hides and leather, non-ferrous metals, paint materials, coarse textiles | and vegetable oils. | | | Increase in Buying. Since prices of basic commodities started to advance actual buying has | increased to the highest level in over & year, and inventeries are entering rcn-l sumption in & more rapid manner.! During the past week reports generally | confirmed a gradual but steady upturn in industrial activity. Figures available | pertaining to inventory showed a con- | tinuation of a downward trend. i Agricultural prices recorded the first | decline in 10 weeks. The drop was due | largely to lower quotations for cotton, | oats, hay and flaxseed. Plans to facili- tate the farm relief bill are going for | ward, as are plans to stabilize industry by controlling produttion, hours of labor and wages. It requires time to complete the machinery which will | make the plans practical and beneficial. Although this period has no precedent. studies of former periods of unusual price changes feature an irregular up- ward trend rather than a steady, un- interrupted movement. Live stock prices moved upward for' the second consecutive week, principally due to higher levels for cattle, shcep and lambs. The price advance from the low. however, measures 17 per crnt.l against 11 per cent for 2ll commodities. Hides and leather showed the great- | est percentage increase of any group. Both hides and certain leathers were | | substantially above the quotations of | the previous week. | Non-ferrous metals also continued | the upward movement due principally | to_higher levels for copper. | Fine textiles remained unchanged | this past week due principally to de- clines in raw materials being offset by | advances in finished goods. Coarse | textiles, however, used in industry were | sharply higher. | Vegetable ofls, as well as paint mater- ials. reached new highs. I The seven groups that averaged high- | er during the week were as follows: Ingustrial products, livestock, hides and leather, non-ferrous metals, paint ma- terials, coarse texiiles.and vagetable ofls. | The four groups that declined moder- ately were: Agricultural products, | | building materials, fuels and ferrou | metals. | Chemicals, fine textiles, paper and | pulp recorded no change from the pre- | vious week. ‘ Important Changes. Most important price changes in the McGill Weekly Price Index were as| follows: | i commodities | industrials ... . | Agricultural Live stock . Hide and leathi Coarse textiles FOREIGN EXCHANGE.
