STOCKS ARE LOWER AT SHORT SESSION "Reactions of Fractions to 2 Points Occur—Close Is Heavy. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Associated Press Pinancial Editor. NEW YORK, May 20.—Financial » markets encountered considerable week end selling in today's short session, and stocks and principal staples receded. Reactions in shares ranged from frac- tions to more than 2 points, and the closing tone was heavy. Transfers ap- | proximated 1,600.000 shares. It was the third successive session in which the share market has been in-| clined to react. Selling was active in , the last hour, with prices churning con- siderably in the last few minutes. A | ger:nmmced reaction in wheat may have n a factor in prompting week end liquidation in equities. Cotton turned | heavy as well. Trade News Cheerful. Week end trade news was again | - cheerful,.but traders in shares were in- | clined to lighten their holdings, in view | of the lack of a substantial technical | reaction over what many regarded as an abnormally long period and un- certainty as to how much further ex- | pansion in business activity could be expected in view of the approach of + Summer. ‘The weekly freight car loadings fig- = ures, as forecast, showed a gain over | the like week of last year, the first time the trend of the previous year has been crossed since 1930, save for the week ended last December 24, which did not - make a fair comparison with the cor- Tesponding week of the previous year, \hich included the Christmas holiday. < Loadings on Class 1 roads totaled 531, 005 cars, up 7,276 from the previous week and 13,835 over the same week of last year, when the trend was sharply downward. . Rails and oils were distinctly steady “4n the first hour, when the market was quiet and trends rather mixed, but gave ~way somewhat in the late dealings. President Roosevelt's message on con- - trol of the petroleum industry was in- terpreted favorably, but when the rest of the list declined, the oil shares sagged fractionally under yesterday's tlumg prices. In the rails, Union Pa- cific lost about 2, but rallied in the final dealings to close off only & frac- tion. Most final prices, however, were + within fractions of the lowest. Other Changes. Owens Tllinois declined more than 2, then recovered a little. Issues closing 1 to nearly 2 points lower included American Telephone, Allied Chemical, ~New York Central, Jchns Manville, Case, « American Can, Crown Cork, du Pont, Louisville & Nashville, Goodyear and Sothers. United States Steel and Gen- seral Motors sagged fractions. ~North American, Consolidated Gas and Public Service of New Jersey lost 12 to % of . & point. Cotton closed $1.10 to $1.25 a bale Jower, and wheat reacted 1 to nearly 2 cents during the period in which trad- ‘was under way in the share market. gtfhu' commodities were mostly inclined “to react. Foreign exchanges stiffened some- .what, reversing the recent tendency toward recovery in the dollar. Sterling cables ruled 1 cent higher at $3.87!2, and French francs advanced .02 of a cent to 4.51 cents. The German mark recovered to above 27 cents. NEW YORK, May 20.—Although “most mon-ferrous metals were quieter this week, prices were generally main- tained, encouraged partly by reports ,of increasing steel operations which Ywere sald to point to heavier use of ~metals.- Steel production was variously | estimated at between 35 to 40 per cent | of capacity. ADVANCE IN STOCKS HELD WARRANTED Improvement in Business! Claimed to Justify Higher Prices. Special Dispatch to The Star. BOSTON, May 20.—Stock market rallies quickly fade, says the United Business Service in its current report, unless they receive the confirmation of trade betterment. The “Roosevelt market,” as this one may be called, has now received such confirmation, the survey points out. The four most im- portant broad indexes of business, car loadings, steel operations, electric power production, and automobile output, are all showing favorable trends. Brief comments on these follow: Car Loadings.—The downward trend of car loadings was halted last Summer, but two relapses occurred after the Fall rise, the first taking place at the year end and a second during March of this year. Loadings are currently about equal to a year earlier, for the first time during the depression. Steel Activity —The increase in steel rations to 35 per cent of capacity ls week continued to rise which started at the end of March when oper- ations were at 14 per cent of capacity. Cqu;mnt production is the highest since | 1 Electric Power.—Following & pro- | longed decline since 1929, the trend of electric power production has turned. Output has been above a year ago for the last two weeks reported. Automobiles.—The trend of motor car production has been upward since last | mmthealum in March, not fall be\ow the 1932 Jow point. ' Current schedules are larger- than lhme in effect a year ago. ‘The average company, the survey con- cludes, is now favorable with volumes about equal to those of last year. Sec- ond quarter earnings, therefore, are likely to make favorable comparisons. And better earnings, real and prospec- tive, are ample justification for higher equity values. New York Cotton By the AssBciated Press. NEW YORK, May 20.—Cotton broke | sharply today on general realizing or| liquidation promoted by a favorable view | of the weather reports, relatively easy| Liverpool cables and weakness in grain. ing of these products for nearby de- livery. Increases in miscellaneous buy- | ing were most pronounced; call from | the automobile industry was at a steady | | pace, while rail and structural awards ‘were limited. Pig iron was in fair de- | mnd in some districts with prices | Oflppe'r held unchanged at the 7 cents basis, reflecting a moderate inquiry for | metal extending into third quarter de- | livery. Producers maintained quota- | itions influenced partly by reports of increased operations by fabricators as a result of heavier specifications for finished products, although this hu‘ not been fully reflected in the call for | metal. There were no further develop- | ments in connection with rumors of | impending Summer mine curtailment, | but the possible influence of the indus- | trial contro]l bill on the copper indus- try was being studled by the trade. 250 Beturn to Work HAGERSTOWN, Md..
