ENGLAND AND WALES BUILDING EXTENSIVE 1,500,000 Houses Since War Rep- resent $4.870,000,000 From Public and Private Sources. More than 1500000 new houses, costing a total of approximately $4.. 870,000.000 obtained from both public and private sources. have been built in England and Wales since the war, ac- cording to a report of the Interdepart- mental Committee on Rent Restriction Acts forwarded to the Commerce De- partment by Trade Commissioner Floyd E. Sullivan. The population has increased by about 2,000,000 in the past decade, and the increase of 1,500,000 houses is con- sidered sufficient to' accommodate ap- proximately 6,000.000 people. so that surplus accommodations. after allowing for_demolitions, according to the re- port. has been provided for about 4.- ©00.000 persons. Thic apparent sur- plus, however, is misleading. the re- port pointed out. in view of the fact that the demand for ind ual family accommodations has increased consid- erably. Only about one-third of the new ac- commodations _consist of houses to rent and it is in this class that the main shortage exists at present. About 1,- 000,000 of the new houses were built for sale and the rest, owing to the in- creased cost of building and the higher standard now required, are rented at a higher figure, it is stated. than the poorer_members of the working class can afford.
