FINANCIAL. TRADIG N U * TURNS IRESULAR Bains and Losses Are About Evenly Divided at Short Session. BY JOHN L. COOLEY, Associated Press Financial Writer, NEW YORK, October 17.—The curb market went through a routine week end session today. Smaller net de- clines developed _in and Associated Gas A, but Brazilian Traction and American Gas held firm. In the ofls, Standard of Indiana re- acted moderztely under realizing sales, Ohio Standard rose a point. Gulf eased fractionally. Cities Service ended the weck at 7%, or iy above Friday's final quotation. COTTON IS HIGHER AS TRADERS COVER Trade and Commission House De- mand Also Tend to Strengthen Market. By the Assoclated P NEW YORK, October , 17.—Cotton was generally higher today on covering, | combined with a moderate trade and commission house demand. December sold up to 6.44, making a net advance of 23 points, and closed at 641. or within 3 points of the best. | The final tone of the market was very steady at net advances of 18 to 22 points. ‘The opening wds steady, 2 to 5 points | higher in the face of rather easier Liverpool cables, and the improving weather prospects. The firmness of yesterday's late market appeared to have brought in some overnight buying orders, while there was very little Southern selling, and trade buying was more or less in evidence, including some further demand for the Far East and | the continent. This absorbed the early | offerings and carred the market grad- | ually higher with January selling up to | 6.55, and March to 6.74, making net | advances of about 21 to 23 points.| Closing quotations were within a point or two of the best, on covering by some | of the early sellers who were disap-| pointed over the failure of Southern edging to develop more importantly in the iate trading. | The weather outlook was considered | generally favorable, and there are some in the ‘trade here who expect that & renewal of picking in sections which have been too wet during the past| week, will be followed by an increased movement of eotton next week. Advices received here from Texas during the | day, however, reported that farmers were holding cotton more tightly, and that, in some cases, spot cotton was being bought as an investment in the Texas markets. NEW YORK, October 17.—Prospects of & sharp reduction in European beet | sugar production this Autumn and Win- ter constitutes encouraging evidence of the progress of the sugar industry's at- tempt to eliminate overproduction and excessive stocks, a current survey by Standard Statistics Co. says. ‘This anticipated curtailment in Eu- rope may, in no small measure, be at- tributed to the adherence of European producers to the Chadbourne program, the survey says, since the acreage | planted this year was considerably smaller than that under cultivation in 1930. Adverse weather conditions have | contributed materially to the indicated | decline in output, by retarding the cur- | rent crop. | That the reduction of beet sugar out- | put this Fall will be quite substantial is forecast by the recent estimates of F. O. Licht and Dr. Gustav Mikusch, Euro- pean beet sugar authorities. The Licht estimate, released October 1, forecasts | a total sugar production for Europe, ex- | cluding Russia, of 6,171,000 long tons, as compared ‘with 8,631,000 tons in| 1930-31. Production by Russia is esti- mated by Licht at 2,150,000 tons. Ac- cording to this initial forecast, a drop in European production of more than 28 per cent is anticipated, while for| both Europe and Russia combined a 22 per cent reduction is indicated. Dr. Mikusch, in an estimate issued early in September, placed the antici- pated beet sugar output of Europe at ;:::_md 25 per cent less than that of last $200,000 STEEL ORDER.
