Without accident or casualty, a group of Naval Reserve fiyers of Wash- ingtcw has completed an intensive two- week course of active duty training, during which 180 flights were made and 138 _hours spent in the air. The flyers, members of Squadron VN-6-R, Fleet Aviation Reserves, | “broke camp” at the Naval Air Sta-| tion, Anacostia. October 15, ending the most_successful annual training period in the organization's history. Advanced Flying Carried Out. | During the two weeks the officers | and men did all sorts of flying—sec- | tion ~ formation - flights, instrument | flights, night flights, dive bombing and | aerial machine gunning. Everything | in the advanced training syllabus was covered. Almost a week was spent in aerial machine gunnery practice at the Cape May, N. J., Coast Guard station. On the trip up and back the Reserve outfit transported all its officers, men, bag- | gage, bedding and 2,000 rounds of am- | munition by plane. The unit's own six | planes were used, while three transport | amphibians were borrowed from the air station. Anacostia Men Praised. | Two days were devoted to acrial nav- igation_flights with radio communica- tion. Each pilot acted in turn as nav- igator and radio operator. Praise for the efficient co-operation | of officers and men at the Anacostia station with the Reserve unit was voiced yesterday by Lieut. M. M. Cloukey, ex- | ecutive officer of the squadron. Every facility of the air field was placed at the disposal of the Reserves, he said. Lieut. Comdr. E. W. Rounds is com- mander of the squadron. DENTIST FACES TRIAL AS SLAYER OF WOMAN Reno, Nev., Judge Denies Writ of Habeas Corpus—Holds Death May Be Murder. | By the Associated Press. RENO, Nev., October 17.—Dr. Carl{ Pierre Andre's’ petition for a writ of habeas_corpus was denied today by | Judge Benjamin F. Curler, who ruled. in effect, that the young dentist must | stand trial on a charge of murdering | Mrs. Martha Hutchinson, former deputy county clerk of Fairmont. W. Va, Judge Curler held that while there was no reason to believe that Andre deliberately or premeditatively threw Mrs. Hutchinson from his automobile ©on September 13. his driving “was of such character that he may have in- tended that deceased should fall from | the car, and if that is true then this case might rise to the dignity of murder, but not of the first degre The fact that Andre and Mrs. Hutch- fnson had quarreled on the day the young widow was killed influenced the Judge in his decision, he said. | Andre’s bail was ordered reduced | from $10.000 to $3.000, but whether he | will be able to raise the smaller amount | appeared uncertain today. Meantime, | Andre was returned to the county jail. — STABBED IN FIGHT Colored Man Cut on Arm and Hip. Assailant Is Held.
