me STOCKS IRREGULAR AT SHORT SESSION Week End Profit Taking ¢ Wipes Out Gains in Early ® Trading. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, October 17.—Securities markets were quiet and fairly stable in today's short session. Shares worked a little higher for a time, but week end profit-taking im- arted a somewhat heavy tone in the inal dealings and some of the promi- nent shares registered losses of from fractions to about a point. Shares closing & point or so lower in- | cluded American Telephone, New York Central, Allied Chenical and Southern Pacific. United States Steel, General Motors and American Can, however, closed with negligble changes Some of the food. non-ferrous metal and specialty shares were firm. National Lead, a thinly traded issue, pushed up 7 points, and Coca Cola more than 3 Issues gaining a point or so included Kennecott, American Smelting, Alaska Juneau, National Biscuit, United Bi: cuit, Corn Products and American Bugar. ‘The mercantile reviews appearing at the end of the week were somewhat more cheerful, reporting that the cooler weather had given a fresh impulse to retail trade, and that comment from business centers generally was some- what more cheerful, although aggregate changes were small. Reviews of the steel industry at the end of the week spoke of fair improve- ment in the inquiry from the automo- bile makers and farm implement man- ufacturers. How soon this inquiry may be translated into actual gains in pro- duction remained somewhat in doubt, for estimates of aggregate activity in the Youngstown area next week indi- cate a substantial slackening. DI\;IDENDS COVERED. Net earnings of Incorporated Investors from cash dividends and interest, and after all expenses, equaled, 284 cents per share during the past quarter, more than covering the quarterly dividend of 25 cents. During the first nine months of 1931 net earnings were equal to 80.2 cents per share on the average number of shares on which dividends were paid, compared with 89.2 cents in the corre- eponding period of 1930. District Business Barometers Power consumption and telephone usage in the District recorded advances during the past month over the corre- sponding period of 1930, while check transactions, postals receipts and retail trade showed declines. according to business barometers collected by The Star. Power consumption here during Sep- tember amounted to 27.712.192 kilowatt hours as compared with 25.266..208 in September of last year, the Potomac Flectric Power Co. reports. ‘There were 174,785 telephones in service here last month as compared with 163,736 in September a year ago, the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co., announces. The average number of originating calls per day last month was 624020 as compared with 570,953 a year ago. NEW _YORK, October 17.—Scott Paper Co. reports for the first nine months of this year net sales of $6.- 704,658.89, an increase of $214,936.13, or more than 3 per cent, over the same period last year. Tonnage of sales dur- ing the nine months was about 15 per cent greater than the corresponding period in 1930, the lower dollar per- centage reflecting price reductions. Net earnings for the first nine months of this year applicable to the common stock were $632,261.60. which compare with $630,588.67 for the corresponding period last year. The company recently increased its 1931 advertising appropriation to in- clude an additional newspaper cam- paign this Fall. 'RETAIL SALES GAIN REPORTED FOR WEEK kLang Price Decline Continues, However, Says Review by Fairchild Publications. | By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 17.—There was a slight gain in retail sales during the past week, as compared with the previ- ous weck, according to the weekly sur- | vey by the Fairchild Publications. Oc- | tober ‘sales to date, however, were still | below 1930. |~ Retail prices on October 1 reached a new low in the present deflation, ac- cording to_the latest index. The final data for October 1 show a decline of | 1.8 per cent, as compared with Septem- ber 1. Prices are 1Z.1 per cent below January 1. The greatest decreases in the month were recorded for musical instruments | and men's underwear. INSULATOR ORDER PLACED. | NEW YORK, October 17 (P).—A large order for porcelain insulators has | been placed by the Pennsylvania Rail- road with the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. and other con- | cerns. The insulators will be used to suspend the high-tension lines for the electrification work now being continued | toward Washington from Wilmington, Del. If shipped at one time, the in- sulators would make a freight train of 182 cars of 30,000 pounds capacity each. | Retail trade slumped but lightly last month as compared with Septem- ber a year ago. the decline amounting to but 1.3 per cent. For the same periods there was a decline of 6 per cent for the fifth Federal Reserve dis- trict and of 14 per cent for the country as a whole. For the first nine months of this vear there was a decline of less than 1 per cent from the mark for_the same period of last year, for the Dis- trict of Columbia Postal receipts last month here amounted to $451,257, this being a de- cline of more than 8 per cent from the total for September, 1930. Check transactions here last month amounted to $93,291.469, this repre- senting an increase over the total for August of this year, but still well be- low the total of $97,868,931 for Sep- tember of 1930. 1931. $109,764.614 96,742,175 112,443,159 113,382,805 | 102,346,949 | 115,114,393 100,887,167 89.484.710 93,291,469 1930. $118.219,264 96,545,212 114,113,696 118,036,652 113,055,037 116,280,346 109,420,638 96,379,442 97,868,931 118,084,915 102,030,387 117,573,071 1,481,390,728 $1,317,607,504 RECEIPTS Fiscal Years 1929-30. $425,262.75 414,342.79 460,574.25 547,474.88 545.321.21 697,118.68 532,771.78 468,827.50 522.980.81 510,751.54 497,580.76 425,518.43 192 $129,438,291 109,649,040 131,795,928 129,300,052 126,836,188 124,028,347 127,497,771 113,553,519 114,986,938 137,968,284 120,261,737 116,074,630 1930-31. $400,232.72 388,263.58 492.838.00 544,793.81 498,194.90 718,541 94 497,506.26 455,085.03 484,627.81 509,060.51 453,095.62 443,065.13 1931-32, $399.565.42 365,060.24 451,257.27 Totals $5.886.415.57 $6,048,525.38 $5,894,305.31 KILOWATT HOUR OUTPUT FOR DISTRICT POTOMAC ELEC 1928. 18,655,125 18.479,857 18,472,095 18,031,834 18,852,464 19,484,101 19,555 847 19,470,453 19,710,347 19,286,368 Month.
